Default Matchless G12 DL

I've been offered a Matchless 650 twin circa 1960.

The price is right. But I've heard of crank problems and the advice from the net is conflicting the better "Noddy" crank rings when you hit it wiv an 'ammer according to one site, or the weaker crank rings when suitably abused as suggested by anuvver site. This confusing information is f**k all use when the crank is carefuly hidden inside ally casings.

Has anyone had experience of these bikes?

It's been a hell of a long time, but I had one of these in the late seventies. I think it cost me £20 - which shows what a high-quality, much-cherished machine it was. Not .

As far as I can recall through the cobwebs, the problem was that apparently the crank was a bit long and used to 'whip' thereby taking out the bearings at either end. I thinkMatchless' solution was to fit a supporting web thing in the middle.

Having said that, it was just something I read, I can't remember having any actual crank problems with mine ..... I just snapped the left-hand rod trying to catch up with a YDS7 down the Marlow Bypass.

Anyway ....

....that really hasn't helped much has it?

I had a G11 and no big end problems at all, but they are very easy to work on, or at least they used to be, in those days you could send off the crankshaft for a regrind and they would supply the new shells and return it in a few days..

Great bikes, very reliable, nearly broke my foot kicking one over..I can still remember the pain, it lasted for about six weeks..

If you are after a real collectors motorbike I think it is only fair to point out that you can get a 2000 Limited edition Yamaha YZF-R1 Dynamite for a mere £3,000, which will do 185mph and has one of those modern push button starter thingummyjigs.

Much more suitable for an old man like you..

Twas like this see, we went to see the G12 at the owners house. Oil was dripping from the primary case which was overflowing due to “wet sumping” Starting the motor pumped some oil back to its tank while the rest decided it would waterproof his concrete drive.
I asked for a test ride and he reluctantly agreed and asked if I had used a right side gear change which was one up three down. I told him I used to own an AJS which had that system, closely followed by a triumph right side but ‘tother way up and a few left side and one hand change. I described my normal method of not using the back brake so that you only have one foot to think about until it becomes natural.
He warned against this saying “The back brake is your best brake”

Really! As I remembered it they were both equally shit.

However the first time I applied the front brake the drum was so oval it nearly gave me whiplash.

It kick-starts easily which is handy for two reasons: - one Lois wants to ride it if we buy it and two it cuts out frequently. I ride it back and stop it next to the lovely Lois who points at the handlebars and asks “Is that the choke?” No that’s the advance lever I replied innocently. The look in her eyes tells me we have a problem, I start to explain what it does and how to use it. In retrospect this may have been a mistake.

Did you explain to her how if you advance it a little bit too much it kicks back and breaks your instep.

No. My firm and confident explanation had petered out to an inefective mumble long before that point.
