aye, my idea of a rat isnot something thats made but something that develops and grows through a long time of keeping it on the road using whatever comes to hand.
but having said that my idea of a streetfighter is a fuck off motor in a minimal rigid frame not a blinged up tarts handbag.
call me old fashioned

I wouldn't call it a rat either, but its got a nice purposeful/survival bike look about it. Neat headlight/spot combo there...

thanks for the input guys,,,,,,yeah it's only a start,, the tailpipe is still shiny
cos it's gunner be cut n shut to a stubby then blacked..
on the point of what makes a rat ? well it's a matter of taste i suppose, mine is set to become a survival rat which is different to a true rat whos roots are american,,,,us brits have a more mad max take on the subject and a much harder edge to our designs..........in the rat world you're bike becomes an extention of you're own personality,,,,you're free to alter it whenever into whatever you like ...the only common theme being the colour....
as far as evolution is concerned ,,no bike in my opinion can evolve without the input from it's rider, just leavin' it for ages in the rain to rot doesn't make it a rat, it just makes it unreliable, which rats certainly aren't,just take a look at some of the mileages they cover..the whole rat thing is image and attitude,
a sort of two fingers to the race rep shiney posers who think money is all you need to be a biker.....sites such as MATTBLACKRAT.COM and UXB.COM can explain better than me though..there is no stereotypical ratbike, they are all unique and cheap to maintain,,,my rat is individual as in it has custom electrics and fully customised digital ignition by myself as well as many other unseen alterations done cheaply as well as parts from other bikes / makes.
the rat scene is a laid back place to be ,not interested with the modern bike persona of track times and the full leather gimp suits associated with todays
race scene clone/slaves.
as can be seen within the pages of 100% biker mag the rat is a bike which is individual to the owner and an extention of his personnality created to be on the outside of todays common thinking for an owner who could'nt care less
for todays consumer led bike scene !!!

here endeth the lesson,,,hope it helps guys

soursocks,,,thats the rat attitude you're showin', keep the faith dude and as yer say who gives a toss anyway...no rat bike is alike so how can they pigeonhole the style we have and say how it should be ,,,,,,,,,rust and faded paint don't make a rat bike,,that happens to all bikes eventually,,,they're then called classics not rats ,see where i'm comin' from ,rats are more than that and have something that just grabs you and matt black just happens to be the most very opposite colour to chrome statementwise !!!

cheers buddy

oh a rat certainly develops, least they used to.
28 years ago i had an xs250 that got modded as and when something broke or fell off using whatever i or m8's had lying around that could be made to fit. at the time i never realised it was ratting itself because there wasnt really a rat scene in those days, least not like today.
as stated above no one was slating yer bike, just us oldies questioning whether a rat is made or developed, kinda like the "whats a bobber and whats a chop" type question.
anyway its your bike, you do what you like and enjoy it.

yeah mate, i know it's not critisism ,,what i was trying to get across was there's no rat the same so the term rat covers a wide selection of interpretations, mine is orientated towards the ratfighter/survival bike style which is more a brit thing than the original stateside rats which tend to have roadkill and whatever else hanging off them...... and when the paint matures it should come across better,,,,believe me under the paint she's a real shit pile but everythin' mechanical is sound,,,,,,,,but the style dictates the difference between a rat and a bike which is merely fallin' apart...like i said the paint job is new but it has yet to become dusty and well used,,,,,can't wait to pile on the miles and let it mature

There's got to be more to a rat than a couple of cans of Barbecue paint.

For me, the idea of creating a rat is a contradiction in terms.

They aren't made, they evolve.

i think the young uns are mistaking survivalist with rat droid.
the term rat came from something that looked and was as ratty as fuck, i.e. a pile of shite held together with whatever.

C'mon folks give him/ her/it a chance, I don't think I have ever owned anything other than rats, Old bangers that I have kept going as cheaply as possible while trying to keep them safely on the road..OK so he has painted it black and he doesn't have the same understanding as me about what a rat is.. rat shed the term is interchangable..this is this persons pride and joy, he took the effort to post a picture of it and he is very proud of it, we all love our bikes, even if everyone else says they are heaps of shit, in most cases they get us where we want to go..and you know what, when we go for a ride out and meet someone new, what do we say.."nice Bike" and sometimes we really mean it..so with only 8 posts, let us cut him some slack and let him ride what ever he wants to until he upgrades to that machine that makes us all drool.

John.
