Default oh dear

been offered a W reg 883 sporster thats in a bit of a mess but engine is sound.
looks like an abandoned project.
ive heard about the wiseco 1200 piston conversion, any idea on prices?
whats a Wreg 883 worth thats in a sorry state, i.e. no seat, needing rewired by looks of things but engine, forks and wheels are clean, comes with V5.
am i mad for considering it?
will normality resume?

id say offer 1300 seems a realistic price considering the work needed, although the engine must be worth the best part of a grand on its own?

I'd say show him the parkers guide and then knock him down as far as you can..after all private poor, means in running order with an mot..

You've got to scource the bits, fit them get it running and through the mot and it's still only going to be worth 1300..

and without the wiring how do you know the engine works.

I'd walk away but you should at least price all the parts, add the labour to find what it will cost you just to get it running before you spend more on it than you would on a better, running one with an MOT.

John.

Parkers Guide is a crock of poo. Its so way out they just pick the numbers out of thin air.

we suggest going the forged pistons and reboring the 883 barrels route.
rather than buying one of the 1200 conversion kits that usually come with cast pistons.
Ensure the boring is carried out by a good machine shop who realise that forged pistons run a different piston to bore clearance.

if you use the 883 heads you will get away from the lights at a good lick. but at higher revs you would lose out to the 1200 heads.

ok, so the guide is wrong, which i thought to be honest, certainly never seen any sportsters on the road here for under 2 grand.
but, is 1800 still too much? as said wheels, forks, shocks and motor look really clean, tank looks like its had a rattle can job going by the photos. brakes seem to be in a box of bits but no sign of throttle or seat. but they may well be there, need to phone the bloke and ask but would like a realistic price in my head before i do.

I don't think it matters that the guide is wrong..what matters is does he know the guide is wrong. and does he care..if you want that particular one you will have to pay his lowest price.

John.

When I'm considering a deal, it comes down for breaking price only. 883? Got to be 600 for the motor and 1000 for a Harley book all day. The rest aint worth nowt really ... maybe front end, 300. And thats probably where the asking price has come from. Bid him down by all means but you'll struggle to find one for less. You'd be better off putting another 300 to it and getting a better complete bike though.
