Default Batteries...

Can you get gel batteries for bikes? Someone suggested getting one for my car when it dies next time, but its my bike that seems to go through a battery every couple of years and for some reason tends to dry out, so was wondering if gel battery (whatever they may be) might be an idiot proof maintenance free option?

Where does one obtain them from and how much are they?

Am figuring if they do last longer its going to be cost effective in the long run...

She's taking lots of time to start in the mornings, and the engines turning over much more slowly which generally is the start of the end of the battery....

I don't look after the batteries in it, i just replace them with new ones on a regular basis!!!

I got told I had to fill bike batteries up with acid, not distilled water like i do with the car one... and i dont have acid, sounds dangerous to me!

Kylie
I believe that Gel batteries are quite expensive and maybe a sealed battery that you don't have to refill or check would be better for you.

When filling a brand new battery you use electrolyte (sulphuric acid mixed with distilled water), this reacts with the plates in some form of white man ju ju to make the magic stuff.

When topping up a battery used distilled or de-ionised water, if you use acid you will changed the specific gravity and screw the battery.

Life expectancy of a bike battery is only around three years for a standard wet fill but if you maintain it properly you will get a lot longer.

Wetcaps is good to remember.

Wipe off excess moisture and dirt from the battery.
Electrolyte level check.
Tightness of terminals.
Casing should be free of deformation and cracks.
Airway breathers should be clear.
Preserve the terminals with battery grease, ensure all connections are clean and free from corrosion.
Security of the battery in its holder.

If the bike is sat for a couple of weeks connect it to a maintenance system such as Optimate, this will monitor and maintain your battery. Try and store batteries in a warm and dry area as cold and damp will kill them.

Hope this helps.

Kylie's bike lives outside so no wonder it eats batteries.

Try Dracken1 for gel batteries, my dads got one on his bike and thats been a better starter since it was fitted, even the maintenence free batteries seem to hate those of us who ride every day but not clean/maintain the bike as often as we should I doubt my dads bike gets any attention between mot's, and then only to fix whats actually broke........ I'm not much better
I'd definately say gel ones are better, in fact Drackens getting me a price for one for my bike if one's available..........

Gel batteries are OK as long as you have a perfect charging system.

Looking after your battery is called BASIC maintenance and should be done every month.

Distilled water top up is fine and every now and then a Battery Aid tablet.

Just don't charge it until its bubbling like a witches cauldron. Get a decent trickle charger or optimiser.
