Default Triumph Trophy 4 -

Got talking to a brother of one of the neighbours today - someone I was talking to last year when I was working on Mrs R's bike. At the time, he'd just bought a Triumph Trophy 4 as a project.

Anyway, the bike is now finished and he brought it round to show me - and yes it is up for sale...

I had a go round the block on it, and apart from a couple of minor niggles involving my big feet (!) as in the brake lever and gear leaving being a bit narrow for my size 10s I quite liked it. It's got plenty of poke and with it being a two seater, if Lou's bike was ever off the road, we could still get to rallies (which we frustratingly can't at the moment, seeing as my head's in the shop getting shims done).

Seeing as Mrs R prefers my bike to hers these days and would have mine at the drop of a hat; I can see a nice way of getting some money back by selling hers on (funny thing is, I'm quite taken by her bike considering all the work I've done to it lately - but it would have to go black if I kept it).

What do folks think of the Trophy 1200?

This one's British Racing Green, and on an M plate, so don't have much idea on what it's worth (UBG site was quite disappointing)... It's in pretty decent nick - there's a ding in the exhaust where the end can meets the black pipe, and the front mudguard has a crack in it. Other than that, the brakes are good, the engine sounded decent and everything looked well. It's only got 19000 on the clock (obviously I'd check that out before going further) and it's pretty clean, plus there are no rattles or oil leaks.

OK, it would mean going back to chain drive and water cooling (two things that I've managed to avoid in recent years). Give me your thoughts chaps!!!

Knew a bloke had one,a limited edition model.
It was a total dog, never ran properly, back and forwards to the dealer who couldn't track down the problems.Eventually threw a rod thro' the casings.
Hopefully it wasn't typical..........

Buy it, it's a Triumph

I've only ever had the triples and, apart from the starter motor clutch, I've had no other problems. A tad underpowered and heavy compared to japs but if you don't want to travel at warp factor 9 everywhere, it will be an ideal bike. I've seen some of them with phenomenal milage on them (150,000 plus) without any engine work done to them.

Try this website http://triumphtalk.com/ or the one further down for more info.

I had a Trophy 900 for a few years, as a tourer it was excellent and we used to make regular trips from Suffolk to Cornwall on it with just one stop for fuel and a bite to eat along the way. The only thing I would fault it on was that it was bloody top-heavy especially with a full tank but that was only really noticable when going slow.
As has already been mentioned the 900 motors could sometimes suffer from starter trouble but I don't know if the same applied to the 1200's. They are quite a dated bike by modern standards and don't seem to be really sought after so I wouldn't expect to pay big money for it.

According to the CAP Little Green Book the average mileage for an M-reg Trophy 1200 would be 35-40k so this one is well under.

My LGB is about 8 months old so probably not way out of date.

It says approx 1500 retail for a clean one with the mileage above. You could probably up that a bit for the low mileage if it's genuine.

Private sale would be a bit less than that, HTH.
