Aye the bit that worries me is they've painted the shock spring.... (I asked the seller), am worried whether that might be a bad thing

Mate I was at Farmyard with is a mechanic and he said it needs doing at some point when I have the cash, and a girl I met there who has exactly the same bike as me said when she did the bushes at the bottom of the shock it made a huge difference to the handling, so I guess that just became next job on the list... so I need to know how many pennies I need to save up.

I also need to find out whether it needs replacing or just something else doing to it, but i suspect the answer is replacing as it looks a touch old!
How did you get from may need a new shock, because "Mate I was at Farmyard with is a mechanic and he said it needs doing at some point when I have the cash.."

To actually deciding you need one?

Especially when "a girl I met there who has exactly the same bike as me said when she did the bushes at the bottom of the shock it made a huge difference to the handling," is 99% certain to be talking about the bushes in the linkage and not the bush on the shock.

Before you rush out and spend money you haven't got on something you might not need, I'd get the rear wheel off the ground and drop the linkage to make sure its not shagged/seized. That being both more likely to be what is causing whatever the problem is, and practically free.

It's certainly preferable to spending your hard earned on a used shock and then finding that the linkage is seized when you come to fit it.

Er it went from that to that when it bottomed out on me with Richie on the back... but it may not have been the actual shock as the shock would appear to be seized (we've been playing with it today and its got no movement in it, its as if its been hardtailed!). Movement may be coming from the dogbones which would also explain why my chain is stretching at an extraordinary rate!

This place put an underrated tyre on my bike - twice, and then tried to charge me for another one cos they both disintegrated themselves due to not being able to handle what my bike put them through - the manufacturer were not impressed either when they worked out why two of their tyres had failed on me...

Ultimately their mistake *could* have cost me my life

I gave them my opinion, and Avon sorted the tyre problem out for me.

Now I just make sure I and all my friends never go near the place again.

Last time I removed your back wheel was to put the new rear sprocket on and that was before your tyre problems came to light.

I thought so - another thing that goes against that bloody bike shop!

its squished the washer into a funny shape cos it shoved it into the hole in the swinging arm...

How long do you need to examine my rear end Grav? I could possibly dive over after work one day next week, or if you need longer then its the weekend...

Grav - nice AA man has had a look at the suspension and its all fine apart from the shock which is fucked - apparently the spring is doing something, but nothing else is.... i forgot to ask him to look at my sprockets though... So its definitely new shock time but he thinks everything else is fine.

Chain had stretched over 200miles so he had to tighten it up again for me (I did it last Sunday), so chain is definitely on the shopping list!

Mate of mine says Iris chains aren't heavy duty enough to cope with my riding - anyone else used them or have any comments about them? (thats whats on and has stretched)

I use an Iris Chain on my Zed. Keep it lubed and adjusted and it should last a fair while.

If you want a better chain, use Regina or DID.

To replace your rear shock is a 2 hour job, including sniggering.......

It is very well lubed as you know! Mate said DID too

Wait till it dies. It's probably good for another couple of thousand miles.

Will try Robinsons

OK - have 2 choices which seem reasonable...

149 for a betor which is not rebuildable and does not have adjustable dampening

239 for a hagon which is rebuildable and does have adjustable dampening

Have had 2 opinions on this so far...

1st is my ex who thinks little of my bike who said no point putting a new anything on that heap of shit (revenge for me calling him a mummys boy )

2nd is a mate who is a mechanic and he reckons that the betor is probably fine for what I need, that the hagon would cost about 100-150 to be rebuilt anyway, and that as I don't actually find the handling a problem when the shock is totally fucked, the betor would probably be more than adequate as it is highly unlikely i am ever going to bother setting it up "just right".

Any thoughts? (remembering she is a 17 year old bike, with the original shock on, but i fully intend to keep her on the road another 17 years)
