I got one of them! I love it!

I always wanted a Shovel right back in the mid seventies I wanted one. I saw a centre spread in Easyriders of a chopped shovel that was owned by one of the New York HA. It was parked on top of a sky scraper!!! (Don't ask how). Anyway, this chop was my dream bike, white and gold, girder front end, chrome everywhere, fecking gorgeous machine. I kept that picture for years.

I bought an Ironhead and loved it, then traded that in for a 1200 Evo Sportster. Then finally got myself a Shovel. Always said I would never move on to an Evo. I just loved the kicker, the way it rode, planning ahead before breaking, the sound of the drag pipes, having to nylock everything. I just loved it until one day I dislocated my knee kicking her over.

Got my 1992 Superglide FXR nearly three years ago. The luxury of just hitting the button and feeling that huge lump burst into life is just pure magic. Fitted a Super E carb and hypercharger last year. The carb made a huge difference to starting and running. I just like the look of the hypercharger, had the money so bought one.

I have ridden all sort of jap cruisers, including the VN1500. Nothing has come close to matching the pulling power of my FXR. I doubt very much if I will ever sell her. First time I sat on her, I just felt like the bike had been built for me. Never misses a beat, always gets me home and always ready to go for more. Never been so happy with a bike as this one.

Chopper.

The one thing I will admit to envying is the noise.
Got open pipes on my Dragstar but it does'nt come close.
Was nearly refused entry to Switzerland because of them.
Fuckin yodellers with their snooty Toblerone.

You can tell different models like any other bike. you've just got to know what to look for.If you're not interested in Harleys then you'll never know the difference. Just like I can't tell one plastic rocket from another.

I've seen a few Harleys fall over from various causes and none have ended up with a broken frame.
FFS I wouldn't want to ride a bike that was that badly made

Wanna Go For a Ride?
A 16-year-old girl was walking down the street when a big man on a black motorcycle pulls up beside her and says 'Hey little girl, do you want to go for a ride?'
'NO!' says the little girl as she keeps on walking.
The motorcyclist pulls up beside her again and says 'Hey kid, I will give you Ģ10 if you hop on the back.
'NO!' said the little girl and proceeded down the street a little quicker.
The motorcyclist pulls up to the little girl again and says 'Okay kid, I will give you Ģ20 and a BIG bag of candy if you hop on the back of my bike for a ride.
At this point the little girl turns to him and screams angrily 'Look Dad, YOU bought a Yamaha instead of a Harley so YOU ride it!'

Proves mi point... Its similar, but the dragstar is sleaker, more refined... Same with sports bikes, going into a room full of them and they'll be one that just pops out from the rest.

Away I'm comparing the Dragstar 650 Classic

I forgot to mention if I had a chance at an Indian!

Buell seem to make a bit of cash making Harleys not look like Harleys.....

They always remind me of slabside gixer streetfighters (old school).

Very true.

Mind, the new flat-tracker Harley shouldn't be too shabby in the handling department.....and it looks superb.

I do like the flat track look and if they can lose 50k, fit a decent frame, some lighter wheels and calipers, quality shocks and a swing-arm that's not made of chinese pig-iron it may well handle

My last bike was a Honda CB1000 'Big One'.

The Harley should handle better than that....

then look at the jap soft tails compared to the soft tail h.dīs

hd - twin shocks working on extension (sort of)

yam - rising rate monoshock (xv 650, xv 1100, xv 1600)

kawa - rising rate monoshock (vn 800, vn 900, vn 2000)

suzuki - rising rate monoshock (volusia 800 and variants)

personally, having ridden many soft tail harleys and soft tail japs, IMO rising rate is far superior.

on the subject of `who is copying whoī, it would be worth remembering that the first of the aftermarket soft tail frames for custom bikes came out around `81-`82, and the first attempt (albeit not a very good one) at that type of frame on a production factory custom was on the monoshocked first series xv 750 yam that came out around `82. the first soft tail harleys came out in `84.

ALL the manufacturers blag ideas off each other without exception, and if they ainīt doing that, theyīre looking at custom builders and seeing what they can blag off them.

but letīs get off this harley bashing/jap bashing bull****. each bike has itīs plus points and minus points. some folks ride japs because they canīt afford a harley - fine, mebbe one day they will. others ride japs because they like that style of bike but DONīT want a harley - equally fine, keep those wheels turning and enjoy it. others ride harleys and love them - excellent, likewise put some miles under the tyres.

they are all MOTORCYCLES, and if riding them puts a smile on your face, whatever is on the tank is largely irrelivent

The Voice of Reason.

For myself, I've been put off Harleys in the past because they've seemed pretty basic and agricultural for the money you pay. My attitude has changed somewhat recently (hence my questions on another thread) mainly because I can now see some positives to riding a Harley. The main one being that indefinable quality called 'character'. And the fact that they seem pretty reliable nowadays.

And finally because my VTR has introduced me to the joys of big V-twins....

If you line up 20 Harleys and then line up 20, say, CBR600's, how long would anyone spend looking at the Harleys as opposed to the Honda's?

This question is'nt about, buying a Harley cos you want people to drool over it, it's to point out that every Harley is individual and not only has it got character, but it has the soul impregnated into from the person who loves it. Most people who own a Harley, put their own personality into it, whatever form that takes and for me, that is what makes a Harley stand out from the crowd.
