Bearing in mind I didn't pay full whack for the Dragstar and I've had it tuned a little, I still get a grin factor while riding it and it does what I ask of it (pull stuff like a train). Also bear in mind mind I think that most (uncustomised) harleys are styled like a pile of tat, I'd buy a triumph before getting a harley (unless its a nightrod)...

I just think its a lot of engine for not alot of gain, or are you forced to spend more cash on mods just to get it running properly?

I have had both and here is my take.

Sporster 1200 XL - Stage 1 tuned

positives
- Pulls like a train no question
- 0- 40 beats most sports bikes off the line
- Corner like it's on rails
- Sound fuckin great

Negatives
- Pre rubber mount engine they shake themselves to death
- too small in stature for 16 stone of pure love machine (me)
- two up is a joke, got to be solo or a pair of sknny lezza's covered in oil for a photo shoot
- Small tank as standard
- when drooped brake will punch through engine casing and cost the earth
- Cost of parts generally are horrendous

Dragstar 1100 standard X reg

Positive
- Lower cost of ownership both intial buy and parts and probaly insur.
- Good size footprint. Great for a solo fatty (me) Great two up.
- Can get plenty of custom mods in line with US customs.

Negative
- Sounds like a girl fanny farting through a vag pad as standard
- Nothing ligament tearing about the pull
- feels plastic - is plastic almost all 'chrome' is plastic.
- Wallowy as hell, suspension is extremely floaty
- Cornering is good when pegs are grinding.
- starter motor is wanky as hell needs reinforcement or replacement.

I ratted mine
1. because I fucked up the paint job
2. I don't really like the styling and had to put my mark on it.

Horses for courses but for the price you do get a lot for your money with the jap cruisers and for the average biker it shouldn't be a thing to be ashamed of. I had 3500 o spend and I could get a sportster o a decent size bike. I went for quantity.

I will have another Harley one day but I will not berate hose who go Jap...btw my Sporty cost me a fuckin fortune in repairs when I was commuting it and getting knocked off.

Pull like a fucking train???
A bastard Drag Queen would struggle to pull the skin off a rice pudding. and you just gotta be fucking jivin' with your dumbass comment about not liking HD styling, what the hell do think your bloody Yamaha's based on, it's cringeworthily and blatantly skanked directly from a Softail.
I used to slate fuck out of HDs as well and swear i'd never have one. Till i could afford one. Keep saving, you'll get there, then you'll look back and laugh at your Drag Queen.
Like we are now.

He loves it and hes happy cos hes just moved into his new gaff. So each to their own.

But Gothtec honey, you should never have tried to make the comparison in the first place, so you did ask for it really. Its only a bit of fun tho you know.

Seems to do the job I ask which is pull things in a train like fashion... No distinct difference between fully loaded and soloriding...

Don't care about origins of styling, be it the paris catwalk or the streets of seatle. I just don't like the styling that un-customised harleys tend towards, apart from the nightrod.

I could probably get the cheap financing I need to buy one, I just don't see a good enough reason to...

No, indeed not, perish the thought in fact.
And why the hell should you, far better to choose something with it's own distinctive and inimitable style. In fact, i take my hat off to Yamaha's ever imaginative, boundary pushing and consistantly original R&D department, they must have burnt the midnight oil coming up with the mould breaking ideas for the Drag Queen, salutations to 'em. They stuck their necks out, mustered up all their collective experience and imaginations in bike design, and came up with with something that'll set for ever a new benchmark for the custom cruiser genre. So when d'you get your Drag Star tat to show your undying loyalty to these pioneers of custom bike design...?

I didn't used to like Harleys until just recently. The club I'm trying to join have been trying to convince me to buy one and, after looking at them, I really like the Dyna sport (FXDX) and the T-sport (FXDXT). I can't afford one at the moment (I'm going to be made redundant soon!!!) but when I can and I get a garage to put it in, I think I may just buy one. Until then, they'll just have to put up with me and my Triumphs (and the Blackbird).

There's an open day at several Harley dealers up here in the civilised north and we're going along to the Stockport dealers today. I wonder what I'll be offered for the Blackbird...

Harley Dealers insult you with P/E on any bike other than HD. In fact they insult you with HD. Its amazing how much the mileage matters when you want them to take it in part ex, but hey, 'Harley's go on forever Sir, dont worry about the mileage. The more miles on the clock, the better it runs' - when you are buying from them!.

I would always sell private to get the best deal. Its all a fiddle anyway cos if they've got plenty of money in the bike you are buying, they can give you more for yours.

When they are selling to you book price goes out the window. But guess what it's treated as gospel when they are frowning over your bike as a possible purchase. Crock of poo really.

Tis true sadly. You just cant trust anyone. Although they have to make a profit and put a warranty on I s'pose, but its how much profit they make that gets me. I know Harley are on 100% mark up on everything cept bikes.

I buy everything from the States. Whatever Gurnsey HD quote in 's (which is ex vat and includes delivery), I can get for the same amount of dollars from US so that makes it half price. And I dont every pay duty on it either.

Somebody who worked at HD once told me that on clothing they make 160%

The FXSTC i like, BUT for me I would have to give it better front suspension / Floating Brakes Loose the skinny front wheel, Powder coat anything that isn't painted. I fuking hate polishing and the standard chrome isnt up to much. Oh and win the lotterey to afford one. I'd photoshop it but A. I'm crap at photoshop, and B it could end up too much like Taff's.

Can't believe there's a comparison test going on between a 650 Dragstar and a 1200cc Harley. The Yam is half the capacity FFS!!.But it does'nt have half the performance!.
Like one of the previous posters I was in the Harley dealership looking at bikes, in 2002,when I was looking for a new bike. Was'nt the prices that put me off,but the people in and hanging about outside the shop that sent me scuttling for the door.
Shower of fuckin accountants and lawyers trying to buy themselves a lifestyle,so the Yamaha dealer got my money, brand new Dragstar 1100 Classic.
So far it's been in Belgium,Holland,Germany,Austria,Slovenia Croatia,Italy,Liechtenstein,Switzerland,France,Ire land and Luxemburg. This summer there's a tour of the Black Sea planned, two up and loaded for bear.
And the "character" thing, character is like time,an abject concept,it's something that humans bestow on inanimate objects, and if I want to bestow my inanimate object with character, fuck you it's my bike and I'll bestow it with whatever I want.
Yeh,I know there's a lot of genuine bikers out there with Harleys, why not, they're good fuckin bikes, but I just don't buy into Willie G's "it has to be a Harley" bull****.
