Thumbs down I'm not sure how factually correct this is but

I heard a story last night about a bloke being stopped in his van by one of these private firms taken on by our rulers to police the roads (the same guys that operate the mobile speed cameras). His crime, one of his tail lights was out. The pursuers then produced an on the spot fine for £30 and a computerised printout stating the van owner had to replace the blown bulb, then take his van for a full MOT. Now this van had only passed its MOT 3 weeks previous. That's no excuse for a blown bulb I know.... but come on, a full re-test for a blown bulb FFS and guess what? Now all MOTs are run through a central computer a garage has to charge full price for a test certificate.
So that couple of quid blown bulb ended up costing this van driver/owner 1/2 a days lost earnings, a fine and the cost of a full MOT.
I wonder how much Tony is paying these people

personally I would refuse to pay any on the spot fine to a non policeman. Id probably not pay a copper either unless I was bang to rights.

Copper tried to do my brother in law the other day for driving his van down a 3T limit road. Rude twat just stopped him and said "thirty quid". No explanation or anything. My brother in law asked him what for. "you know your not allowed down here, thirty quid". BIL "I live on this road, Ive got access rights". Plod "Oh ok then". Rude fecker, no apology or anything.

dont know about englandshire but up here in jockland you cant be done for a moving offence....you must be parked or stationary to get done.....

The only people who can do you if moving is the boys in blue themselves

(just as an aside...I've lost count of the police cars i've seen driving about with a duff headlight....wonder if they do themselves ?? )

Was it a 'some bloke in the pub told me' kind of story - sounds well suspect to me

I think this story is bollox.

They had a copper on our local radio the other day and he said that the 'on the spot fine' is a bit of a misnomer - they cannot take any cash off you on the spot - they give you a ticket and you have to go to the cop shop to pay it.

Also, AFAIK they have to give you 7 days to sort out minor faults. If there's major faults, they can impound the vehicle. A mate of mine got pulled for having a tail light out on her bike. The copper was halfway through writing the producer when she took off the seat, got out a spare bulb and replaced it. It didn't half piss the copper off.

Default urban myth

urban myth, turns up every once in a while, and people who really want to believe it are wound up and go off on one with absolutely no evidence or factual information, dont believe me? look at the original posting, starts with"i heard this story last night" and then the responses are all posted as though the story was factually correct. honestly, if you all believed the "storys you heard last night" then how did you survive infancy, what with all them storys about bears and big bad wolves

It's right regarding the full mot retest for minor faults, me mate has just started doin MOT's an has the new computerised system an we had a customer come in with one of these slips she had to have a new tyre fitted (reason she was pulled over)an a new full mot (she had 6mths remaining on existing mot cert) it was issued by VOSA not police. The tyre that was defective was not dangerous just below wear limit.

I've seen a bear and a wolf, they are real.

The powers of VOSA "officers" are increasing. In some areas, in trial schemes, they are stopping vehicles of all catagories, and handing out fixed penalty notices, and enforcement notices. In extreme cases, they can prevent a vehicle from completing it's journey.

Default urban myth

well like all good urban myths, it has got some believable facts mixed in to it, thats what makes them believable to the people who like a good conspiracy theory.
but,
the story states that the van was one run by the people who are operating the speed camera vans. now i dont know about the rest of the uk, but in the nw, the camera vans are operated by civilians working for the speed partnership, a sort of front company wholly owned by the plod and the local county council., so they have no power to pull people over, they just point the camera and press. next the post says that they pulled him over for a duff tail light, which implys they were following him and flagged him down, how, the vans dont have blue lights, nor the drivers the authority to stop people. and the last line has a pop at the govt and blair, giving away the sentiments of the poster. it wasnt true, but he/she WANTED it to be cos they could grind their own political axe over it. even though if it was connected to the speed partnerships, then the people would be hired and paid by the local authority, not central government.
