Funny you should say thst. I was decanting the homebrew yesterday from demijohns, aand filtering into more demijohns. The Rhubarb was so sweet that it curled your toes! And the apple, was up etih Westons cloudy cider in Looks and strength...flavour however was another thing altogether!....

Off to Hell or Hull prison as it’s otherwise know, but with the dumb planning of those in the back office I have far too much time (around 5hrs) to kill between setting off in the truck from my first prison destination and the time I’m due in hell to drop off the load. So I’m skiving killing time watching the numerous motorcycles riding past me.

On a positive note the triumph flew through the MOT on Thursday, so now I have an urge to head off to Spain etc

Right, on the very seriuos matter of homebrewing,,, anyone tried making homebrew out of sugar beet? As there is about four tone of the buggers rrotting in the field next to me, and the farmer says that it's not worth clearing up and taking to the beet factory...

No, but I should imagine the hardest part would be grating or dicing the buggers as they are extremely tough.

They talk about making alcohol from sugar beet in the "Colditz Story", the POWs made it and it tasted utterly foul but was very alcoholic

It is the sugar that converts to alcohol so the more sugar and better the yeast the stronger the booze.......

I've been asked to write an Eulogy for a member of my Dad's aircrew from when he was a bomber pilot during WW2. I'm now trawling through my DAd's logbook and 1944 diary. Dad and the crew were only 21 at the time. Dad said that he had learnt how to fly a plane before he had learned to drive!...

Might pay to find a history of his unit ( I believe you said it was an aircrew training Squadron) and pick some events from there. Many aircrew died during training as night flying with tiny navigation lights would have been a nightmare in peacetime with fully trained crews let alone trainees on moonlit nights where the lights were invisible......

Dad was a bomber pilot on 578 squadron flying halifaxes. They did have a crash when training in a Wellington. Years later when Dad wrote about this For the Bomber Command Associaton newsletter, one chap had looked into the crash report from the MOD archives and had found out that the plane had been inadequately serviced and supervised, to the point the whole of the blind flying panel had failed during the training flight, and it was only through my DAd limited skills at the time that he got the plane down level enough to crash land. Not one crew member suffered a scratch apart from one of the gunners got knocked out, when he got ejected from the rear turret. even then they think he tried to jump out from the turret and probably knocked himself out from the fall, as had he been thrown out he probably would've got some sort of injury, but he didn't even have a scratch. They went on to do a tour of 40 ops together, and when they finished, they were all sent in diferent direction and never met up as a complete crew again.

Must be where I got the idea of a training/conversion Squadron seeing as you wrote about it a long time ago......

An hour to remove metal bars covering the utility room windows. They were screwed in the 10x2.5" slotted woodscrews. some I had to get the angle grinder to!

Cleaning out the utility room, and sealing off the outside wall from from water/damp ingress, so goes and buys and tin of Thompsons Water Sealant for 14 quid. Slaps it on on the outside. Puts the tin back on the shelf and notices a half full 5 ltr bottle of PVA Bond..starts reading it. Can use as a sealer..!!!!! Doh! Oh well don't need to buy any more sealer for the damp that comes thruogh the concrete floor! When they built the room for the Utility they didn't bother putting down any membrane in them days!, at least they did build it with a damp proof course at least!
