Default John Hopkins in Felixstowe

Ok some of you have asked why I'm here in Felixstowe...Well here it is, My oldest daughter (35) married a felixstowe boy that she had been going out with since they were 14, on 24th June he had a massive stroke and has been in an induced coma ever since..he'd lost some use of one side of his body, all or most of his sight, caught a chest infection and another blood infection had both lungs collapsed for some time, a liver infection, lost a large chunk of his memory so that he can't remember his kids...last friday they were able to take him off the respirator for three hours and he could make noises with the aid of o voice box fitted in his throat, but now he is out again..my daughter has not left his side for more than a few hours and Liz (my wife) and I are here for as long as it takes to look after our grandchildren, it has been a month so far and could easily stretch to another three or four months, I miss wales, I miss my bike...but this is where I belong now...John

no words will help John , but the fact that your daughter knows that you are both THERE for her and her family will mean so much.

I hope and wish that it all turns out ok , it sounds like its gona be a long haul but you come across as a great bloke who will do all he can for his family , respect to you .

may you have peace in your heads and hearts

sorry to here about your girls fella. if he`s been with her that long he must be like a son to you, it`s not all over once he gets out of hospital. that`s when the really hard work for your daughter will begin. i know this as my mother had a bad stroke in her older years and having family comming closer to help out was a massive reliefe to me. hope he gets a lot better as time goes on.

Just caught this John

My wife had a stroke 6 years ago, luckly not as bad as your son-in-law. My job until recently was Rehabilitation Nurse esp. for stroke so if you want info or support just pm me.

http://www.differentstrokes.co.uk log onto this site for help and support. They are all people who are stroke survivors or they're relatives. Lots of good advice and support. When my wife took ill it was an OT that put me in touch with them best thing that ever happened.

Anyway I wish your son-in-law a speedy recovery and know that your daughter and grand kids have your total support. The next few years are going to be tough for the family and I wish them all the best.

On a practicle point get down to the Social and pick up the forms for DLA(disability living allowance) Get the forms filled out now, even though he is in hospital at present he is still entitled to claim The payment has a 3 month qualifying period and should he be in hospital for the next 3 months then his payments would start straight away. If you left claiming til he came out it would leave them in financially unstable. Again if you need any assistance filling in these forms let me know and I will help(do it all the time for my patients)

Just a quick update...Peter was transferred from Addenbrookes intensive care last sunday evening, He was knocked out for the journey to Ipswich intensive care, where he stayed until tuesday, then he was transferred to the high dependency unit and the next day he was moved to a ward full of people over 300 years old, and was only allowed 2 hours a day visiting, Friday he was allowed home, more dead than alive, shaking like a leaf, blind as a bat and hardly able to move, now he is improving with every passing hour, He still has bits of the same problems but can get up the stairs, eat and drink, and hold a conversation, the main problem is that he has absolutly no sight and believes he will get it back....My thanks to Sheltie for the advice, and RetroRider for the generous offer of a loan of her GS500...It was a pleasure to meet you and your husband Ruth, It was also nice to talk to you Scott. I'm still needed here for some time, but every day in every way, things get better and better...Many Thanks to all of you... John

Gee I must be pyschic (or should that be psychotic ) was wondering on Saturday if further progress had been made. At least now he is home there will be lots of stimulation and with his family around he has the best chance of acclimatisation and recovery. Best of luck & keep us all posted

You,re absolutely right Ruth, he is recovering in leaps and bounds...he can manage the 14 stairs both up and down and is talking well, food is beginning to taste, still has balance problems but may soon ditch the zimmer, still sees little men standing beside and around him, and still has the shakes from the drugs, and I understand the urine from his cafeter bag in addenbrookes was 90% opiates and 5% barbituates and is due to be sold on ebay during the next few days... John
