Its a crack - LITERALLY - Can anybody help??
Hi all, well last weekend was the NABDonia rally in Wales and after a few months of work the trike was running sweet as and we were really looking forward to it. Got all the electrical, fuel and exhaust issues sorted and everything else seemed great, apart from a very small leak that appeared to be from one of the axle oil seals as I was getting the odd drip, got from where we are, near Stansted airport, to Watford Gap services all was going great, 10 miles on from there my mate pulled me up to say that my rear brakes appeared to be smoking, then I noticed the centre tread on the rear left tyre was blistering. pulled over and it appeared that somebody had hit me when we stopped at the services as the mudguard appeared to be rubbing on the wheel, whilst trying to figure out what to do we noticed this

Yep, the axle has cracked and bent!! so thats me stuffed!
If anybody has a 'spare' reliant axle at a fair price and would be prepared to sell it to me, I am more than willing to pay for the axle and the cost of delivery. Alternatively I am wondering whether or not I will be able to weld it as long as the half shaft isnt bent or damaged, there isnt any grinding when it is free wheeling but not sure if I am being over hopeful about repairing it and basically pissing in the wind!!! Any help or advice would be appreciated, any axles would also be appreciated, but I do realise that people dont tend to have perfectly good reliant axles laying about not needed. Thought it was worth a try, cheers all

Hi
Unlikely someone clouted it, more than likely the welding at that point made the axle brittle. However, living near Stansted, try the spiritualist centre near to the gypsy camp at the back of the airport, its on the junction of Church Road where it crosses the M11, big red brick mansion. There were TWO reliants slowly growing into the ground there a couple of years ago. If I remember correctly they belonged to the odd job man / gardener or somthing like that.

nothing to do with being hit, thats broken due to crap construction and fatigue.
the axle tube wall is thin anyway, it certainly doesnt need weakening with pigeon poo welding, and Im guessing that the clamp part is possibly welded to the axle, it looks like it is?? is the clamping part properly sized? could it have been crimping the tube as well?
this will have weakened it, along with the other brace or mount in close proximity.
new axle time and also time to have a rethink about the mounting

I would be checking the rest of the frame if that welding is typical for the whole lot

Just like to say the welding is nothing to do with me, was like it when I bought it, I know it has to be drastically improved/ redesigned, which is all in hand, it was just that after seeing axles on Ebay starting at £250, I thought I'd try my luck, will get there in the end, makes it harder that I have nowhere to work on it, housing association doesnt take to kindly to building projects in their precious parking bays!! ho hum, see what happens!!!

Looks like the mounts are too close to centre and putting more strain on the axle. Better to mount closer to the end of the axle. Bad welding, bad mounts and wrong position have caused that.

I think I'm going to have to pretty much remove everything from my seat back as its all welded to each other in a rather strange way, the back seat is mounted to the frame and then directly onto the axle, I think I will end up extending the frame out the back a little more and mount the back seat and box to the frame and then mount the axle by itself with a lot more bracing and strengthening, been talking about making it a little longer on the back since I bought it, nows my chance, just wish it was as easy to do as it is to talk about it!!

Lots of guys comdemning but not much advice , dissapointed guys , Spider i'll find a new one somwhere , might be from a different make , the suzuki vans are plentiful. then we'll sleeve it for strength and redesign the back framwork to distribute the weight more evenly . the welding should be to a sleeve or mounting bracket not directly to axle. The welding in the picture is mig , Which is messy so we'll use arc instead . a lot prettier. No worrys brov i'll pop down during week and make some plans. Don't stress out buddy we'll fix it and for less than you think it'll cost. PALS

bit hard to offer advice when all I can see is close up pics and thats it
I would only too happy help with advice and hard work, if I was closer
sorry but its better in my opinion to break the news how it is, no point warpping it up in pretty paper, the truth is the truth and it will always be the best option
sounds like your going to help him and hopefully make sure its safe for future use, hes very lucky to have a mate like that , I hope that he has much fun and safe times in the future.

I am very lucky to have some good friends who help out a lot because of my limitations due to disability, always there to help with the heavy or awkward jobs. The main reason for this post was to try and source an axle as the £250 on eBay are taking the piss!! Got lots of ideas for how to improve the frame, it was always one of those its working, Im on the road, leave it. Now that it has got to the point where it needs sorting I am going to take my time, plan it all out and basically rebuild the back end so that it is a lot stronger, better designed, better looking and more how I have always wanted it. Will get there in the end!!!

Not at all sure as to suitability for your trike or transport issues but I do have a fairly light rear axle removed from a haiundai pony pickup I think. intention was to build a bmw trike around it and a bmw engine and box I have as the ratios were pretty damn near the same but would happily sell it if it's of use.

Another forum I use has a 'forum relay' where members advertise stuff they need moved on the forum and other might offer to take it all or part of the way. Beer money normally offred for big bits, might be worth putting something up here on the classifieds section.
Hope you find somit closer but if you don't give us a shout if you are passing and it'll probably still be sat where it is waiting for me to do somit about it

Thanks for the offer, little too tricky for me to get too, much appreciated though, I am checking eBay daily, couple on there starting at £250 which I think is overpriced, cheers for the link Mick, already watching that one, lost one the other day, was at £36 until an hour before it ended, finished up going for £130 odd, just have to keep checking daily and hope that something comes up soon enough, Im sure it will all work out in the end, well I bloody hope it does!!! Cheers all for the advice & input.

My local scrappy has 2 reliants in (or did the other day) and you shouldnt have to pay them more than £50 for one the only problem is they wont post
If you get them to take one off which they do free of charge and can get a courier to collect it from my house i will wrap it up ready for posting after collecting it from the scrappy
The scrappy no is 01228 520109 and is in carlisle
