Default Trikes?

OK time to stir things up a bit, Trikes, Nothing against bike engined trikes (had an R80 trike and the missus has a z550 trike) But,

1) Are car engined trikes actually trikes or are they 3 wheeled cars?

2) If you cut a car in half and graft a bike front end on it, is it a trike? or again is it a 3 wheeled car?

3) If a person has a car license only and riders a trike, does that make them a biker by default?

4) Boom style trikes, Is it just me or are they just fucking hideous?

Does anyone give a shit? They're all just trikes.

Personally I much prefer a nicely done home grown custom trike to any of the Boom, Rewaco ones etc, but that said, at least SVA has had an impact on some of the dangerous abortions that were being put on the roads.

As for licence, again - does it matter?

I personally couldn't give a shit what you call a trike (bike or car - whatever, they are trikes, not bikes, not cars), they have some of the most interesting engineering on them at custom shows and they have their place in biking, the rationale behind their desighn being as varied as the owners, they keep a lot of folk in the wider biking fraternity who might otherwise not be able to join ride outs or rallies outside of a car. As to what licence someone has, that's between them and the DVLA as to which set of hoops they can afford to jump through, most of the population think I'm mad for having done the full bike test but not the car one which is the easyer and cheaper to attain as it has only 1 theory and 1 practical test to pass unike the bike one that now seems to need 3 tests!
For me a home grown trike with interesting solutions to getting parts do do jobs quite differently to how they were intended to be used is what I like to see.

A trike is a stand alone vehicle whether based on car or bike.
riding one is nothing like driving a car or riding a bike.
I do agree with you about the rewaco & boom trikes.

I prefer the one off custom built trikes, but I'm fussy.
Each to their own.

While I'm here.....

I've had a trike, won't have another.

If I couldn't ride a bike solo, I'd put a sidecar on it.

I Built a trike with Volks1600 engine using wilmac parts from usa etc in the heady custom daze of the late 70.s.. to look at it was the dogs bollox, chrome Girders, hallcraft front wheel big fat rear tyres and dripping with metalflake candy paints and quite rare in its day...it would wheely away on a handful of revs in 2nd and 3rd gears...however to this very day i have never had another trike and dont think i ever will.....ya still get piss wet thru in the rain,ya cant filter in traffic, and ya at the mercy of the insurance company's for cover...for me at the time , i enjoyed the build, stripping polishing the engine block .. welding, fabricating the chassis etc but it was all just that in the end...A Fabricating creative exercise..AND as to the question ...It Wernt a Bike and it wernt a Car. it was a TRICYCLE..

Being old and decrepit now, I need a trike, but then again, I dont have to explain my reasons to anyone, my money, my choice, my ride.

Quite right mate. We could almost replace the word trike with "Harley"...

On the practical side bikes have their drawbacks too, you get wet, cold and they are genrally a bit crap on snow, ice and diesel spills, not to mention having limmited carrying capacity for shopping. If we applied logic to biking we'd almost all be driving cars. I've never had or been on a trike, but wouldn't rule it out, in fact I've been collcting bits to build a 2 wheels at the front trike for some time.

I do love the way trikers get all arsey when ya poke em with the "aint a proper biker" stick.... I especially love the ones that have come into "biking" having never ridden a bike but have a car license so get a trike. They are my absolute fave to wind up .

Personally couldn't give a shit either way but i gotta amuse myself somehow

You could always ride your z400 trike. Do you still have the 3 wheel piagio van moped trike thingy? That was funny rolling out your workshop, have the guy's in the paint shop stopped laughing? You might have to explain that one now, oopse.

Well as you keep poking them out, I'll give it a go..

Chopping a bike up to make a trike is not my idea of a good thing, my latest bike is a 1500 cc drifter which only has a top speed of 110 mph..to me that is almost wasting 1000 of those cc's by converting them to noise instead of speed, now if I have to have a trike I want one that has a bigger engine than a pokey little 1500cc's, I want a three and a half litre rover engine..in fact, sod the trike, I want a Morgan.

John.

Trikes do have thier place on the bike scene. A lot of them, that place is in a fucking skip.

Many years ago I took a part finished VW trike in part exchange. I finished it, got it MOT'ed and had a great laugh on it for about 3 months. I could wheelie the damn thing for miles. It was great in the dry, but absolutely shite in rain. I sold it for outrageous amounts of money to an idiot with more money than sense. He crashed soon after buying it.

I know a couple of guys with trikes and both of them cannot ride bikes due to previous injuries. Without thier trikes they are pretty much housebound. I have to say I feel sorry for them as to me, trikes have none of the benefits of cars or bikes but all of the hassle of cars and bikes. So in thier case, trikes are a winner.

Some of the trikes that I have seen at events and on the road, have been so badly built it is a miracle they have not killed themselves or others. These piles of junk are the reason we now have the MSVA.

Just as an exercise, I wouldn't mind building a custom trike, using something like a Honda Pan Euro, USD forks, fugg off big back wheels and a Sierra diff or Jag diff. Don't think it would go down too well on club runs though! LOL

What you ride or drive is your choice, you pay for it.

Chopper

I now ride my Can-Am Spyder with a great big blue badge on it, my disability is the only reason though, hopefully a couple more op's down the line and I'll be back on two wheels - Still coveting and old FJ 1300.

Presently I am seriously considering going on to a Ural combo.

Don't have a Blue Badge but I ride a trike cause I can't ride a real bike. I now have back problems given to me by a car doing a U-turn in front of me back in '83 when I was a courier.
