Default Electronics help? (charging)

This is weird one, connected a cheapo voltage meter/display which promptly failed, so started to test the voltages both battery and running, now the battery voltage is fine which to me indicates that the system has been charging.

However with engine running the voltage is totally erratic, meter just wont see any stable voltage, all kinds of fleeting readings from 2v to 19v.

System comprises of Lucas thee phase alternator, new but old Volt-pack KS four wire rectifier/regulator, now i have statically tested the alternator, and have tested the regulator/rectifier while running with the charge wire disconnected, and it seem to give an unstable voltage between 2v and 5v, i have also done the usual static continuity test for a reg/rec which it checks out.

The other odd thing is that with the charge wire disconnected from the battery/system, i am seeing a voltage of more than 12v up to 14v which is totally weird!
Oh the ignition system is an old Lucas RITA which seems to work OK but i did notice the metal battery box that it earths/sinks to getting quite hot, is this normal? or could this be the source of the odd voltage without reg/rec connected? other than that it run fine.

Try a running test on the alternator, you should see steady AC voltages between all three phases.

Could be anywhere between 25 & 80 volts AC but as long as they're all in the same area the the alternator should be OK.

Is your battery in good nick and fully charged? A good battery should be over 12.5 VDC.

Will give the alternator a running test tomorrow, got the tank off at the moment, but it all checked out OK no shorts etc, battery is nearly new, and is currently showing 12,3 volts, i am starting to think its the regulator side of the unit, as i don't think you can use a diode continuity check to tell if that side of the unit is OK?

A diode check would be a good idea. If a diode is starting to fail on the bridge rectifier it will give you odd readings.

Already done a diode check and that side of it has all the correct readings, that's why i think its the regulator side of the unit, apparently nearly all jap reg/rec are compatible, so i will buy a cheap one from eBay and give that a go.

I got a three phase unit from Feked a while back for around 25 and that seems to hold up well.

So far as i can tell...although i am not totally convinced yet, the thing that got me worried in the first place is that i fitted two cheap eBay voltage gauges that both failed, the first just stopped working, but the second just started smoking, which prompted the testing and subsequent panic about the odd readings, on recommissioning my old meter the voltage seems much more stable.
