Default S&S Experts?

Does anyone know of an S&S expert lurking amongst us ? I went for a quick new years eve ride yesterday and she stumbled and sounded like she was only firing on one. I pulled over and she still managed to tick over. I decided to nurse her back home but she died about 1/4 of a mile short of home.... she still turned over and I had 2 sparks with the plugs out, any ideas ?

Sounds like a fuel problem. Have you got fuel at the carbs? Could be some crap in the system or even water.

Thanks Strima, it's just back from the menda's, started ok and was going great, then it went as previously described, I emptied the bowl which was full of clean fuel...

I'd take a look at the fuel pipes, they could well be blocked. As I'm not familiar with the set up I can only give out the basics but certainly sounds like fuel starvation.

Also check the breather on the filler if it has one.

Logic would suggest that if you have sparks and fuel in the float bowl that the next check would be the jets to see if they are blocked.

Could also be a partially blocked pipe that doesn't fill the bowls quick enough when running. As the bike runs well enough until the bowl gets empty I would be leaning towards a partially block fuel pipe.

Rather than replace the pipes start by running a pipe cleaner through them.

Good ideas, keep them coming Just for info there's an inline filter between the tank and carb.... why did it seem like one cylinder seem to stop first, mind you, when it all started she still managed to tick over roughly back onto 2 cylinders... so just enough fuel to tick over but as soon as you try to gas it it gets starved. Why does only 1 cylinder get starved ?

Does sound like a fuel starvation issue, although its equally possible that its could be a sticky float valve which could cause too much as well as too little fuel, both of which could cause the cut out.

One cylinder could be bias in its intake, so the other has not enough/or too much fuel to fire, as said check fuel is getting from the tank to the float bowl, and clean/blow out the idle and main jets, there is a basic setup guide here,https://www.sscycle.com/tech-info/in...rb-quick-guide

The trouble is the S&S is based on the old Tilitson design, i swapped the one on my old Sprtster for an new type Amal and that made it a lot easier to start.

Could there be moisture of something blocking the tank vent, causing a vacuum in the fuel supply?

My pal has just had some 1st class work carried out by West Coast out on his big dog K9 which nobody local has the facilities to do so I'll give em a chance and see what happens

Good luck with it. I've only had good experience with West Coast so I'm sure you'll get sorted. I just thought your local Indy might have been the obvious choice.

Sounds good, where are you based? The local indy would be ideal but 2 not so good experiences have made me look further afield. West Coast will sort me out so I can get out with confidence this summer

I've not used him but he's got a good rep. There's one of his stickers in my service book as my Harley's last owner was from Aberdeen which is why the name always sticks in my mind.

Default Sorted !

New ignition barrel, coil, leads, plugs, LED turn signals, LED Daymaker headlight, complete re-wire from front to back and a new battery. Starts and runs like a bullet !

Problem was ... just about everything was wired up badly or completely wrong altogether! The compression release on both cylinders were wired up wrong too.

Thanks to West Coast I now have a bike
