Default Fookin 'ell!!

You just got to see this to believe how much the guy is asking for this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1811443987...84.m1423.l2649

Have a look at his other items as well. I had to read it a couple of times to make sure I wasn't seeing things or reading a typo. Is he smoking something he should be selling or what?

When you think about it, maybe this is the future, running costs of a motorbike are increasing at a great rate..road tax is 78 a year and increasing, insurance costs never go down, MOT and spare costs are never low and a new bike can easily cost close to 20k..Just look at the Gen.2 Vmax and the Indians..The bike test in Britain is becoming too difficult for anyone to pass at first go, people who ride bikes over 125cc's are going to become an endangered species..This will mean that because of low sales the price of producing a large cc bike will increase and the retail price will make it a rich mans toy..

Of course all of the above could turn out to be true or fantasy but the true value of something has always been what someone will pay for it, so maybe we are undervaluing our bikes..why should an oil painting be worth so much more than a well made one off motorcycle, and why should a rare antique be worth more than a rare motorbike.

Why is a Vincent worth so much..

I have a 1986 Honda shadow VT700 for sale..14,000 anyone..Just needs a bit of tidying up..

John.

What people are asking for some bikes nowadays is a joke. I had an argument with some muppet on a well known socialising site who couldn't understand why no one would pay 750 for a 30 year old American import GpZ550. I showed him a bandit 600 on that well known auction site which was going for 800. His reply was something along the lines of "yes, but bandits are ten a penny. Mine is a rare bike". After I'd informed him that bandits were also faster, more reliable and parts were easier to get which make them ideal work horses and his was worth around 400 tops, he said it was worth what he was asking and he wasn't going to take any less. I last saw it on said auction site with an opening price of 600 and no watchers or bids.

8k for a lambretta isnt that out of the way, if it was a Tv or SX 200

thats an LD and worth maybe 2-2500

the classic market is stupid, seems to be a surge of people over the last few years with newly disposable income, kids moved on etc etc, and now want toys or to relive their yoof

also quite funny is the fact that even more desirable are unrestored bikes and scooters, the trend seems to be that its only original once, I was at a parts fair last weekend, saw 2 scooters same model, and 1 year apart.

1 was tidy but original, some rust and worn through paint etc, tuther was fully restored and shiney, all the interest and offers were for the original one, rusterations etc are making prices go silly.

Reading all the above posts,I still come to the same conclusion. The dealer has a head full of magic,I know old 70s mopeds can bring good money but he is atleast a third over their value, the gt750 Suzuki is probably 4k over, infact his prices are a turd too high on almost all the bikes, from that I conclude he must be of Irish heritage

about 5-7 years ago i was running around on a fs1e as a winter bike - it was brother in laws who got it as 3rd owner in 1975, it was a rare early orange m reg one with drum front brake and needed pre-mix. anyway the rear mudguard had split across the top and the front on was starting to bubble up the chrome so i looked for a replacement.

That is when i found out how stupid the prices have got for these - i rang vintageyamspares or something similar as they listed mudgaurds and was quoted 130 for one "good enough to make a pattern from" when i explained i had one but it had split/been welded/split again he offered me 100 for it - the front one was a similar story. I then fitted a cheap pattern set for a later model with a 6v enduro light/plate set up.

There is a big disconnect between concourse ones done for show which go for silly money purely as someone has tracked down/recreated parts for their OCD hobby and bikes people ride. Remember all fixings on those bikes were made of cheese (fs1-e uses crosshead bolts for the engine casings etc and had a pressed steel frame) and designed to last sub 5 years

I finally flogged it to a local bike shop (for normal money) who are still doing it up as I just did not have the time/contacts/skills to restore it and used part of the money to sort out a 125 for spare/winter.

Probably be bought by a 'bad to the bone' solicitor, who'll ride it the third Sunday in every August ... if it doesn't rain, so he can shock all his 'friends' when he tell them he is a biker....

They do give you a lovely welcome smile when you first enter their office..A mate of mine needed a solicitor for his divorce..When he came back from his office I said this is going to cost you all your money..Nah he said it would cost me 650 if everything went smoothly..He's up to 4,000 in fees now and still counting..

Did you know that most of our MP's are solicitors or baristors..the rest are accountants..

I reckon the guy trying to sell a bike for 60k, is some poncey fucker in a suit with some spare cash of dubious origin and wants to launder the money.

The bike I linked to was/is quite nice, but it definitely ain't worth what he is asking for it. All of his other stock is grossly over priced.

I know that you pay for a particularly desirable bike, but they are still only worth what someone is willing to pay for them.

How many of us have got hold of a bike and hacked it about to our liking, added expensive parts, paint jobs etc, then decided that for whatever reasons, that we want to move on to something else. We mostly end up NOT recovering what we have paid out for parts and services, BUT we usually accept that we have had our fun with that particular bike and what we are selling is our ideal bike and someone else has now decided they can make what THEY want out of it.

NONE of us want to give away a bike that we have enjoyed and would obviously like to make a few quid out of our bikes. There is making a few quid and then there is a laughable attempt at ridiculous money grabbing.

Most of us lose a few quid on our bikes when we sell them and most of us don't really care because we have had real enjoyment out of them..I bought a Honda VT700 Shadow two years ago from a chap in Leeds..I bought it mainly because I wanted to ride from Leeds to Suffolk and then on to South Wales, I paid 700 for it, put it through two MOT's taxed it and now have to Tax it again, it needs a new rear tyre and when I take the rear wheel off I will need to grease the splines, patch and repaint the mudguard/fender, probably replace the brake shoes and it will still only be worth about 700..

But I've enjoyed the ride..

John.
