if anyone wants my 2 pennies worth, i look at the bikes which have old fire extinguishers for tanks or 6 foot tall sigle sided front ends or even 6 inch nails on the under tray and i gotta think that that is a survival bike cos no way did it just evolve that way! to me a rat is a bike which is 100% original except for odd parts which have failed/fallen off over the years and have been replaced by whatever is handy and cheap. If a bike is left under a wet carpet to make it look old, that is no different to me polishing to make mine shiny. basically im saying i dont believe true 'rat' bikes are custom bikes and fitting 10 front lights and moto-cross hand guards is customising not 'ratting'.

to conclude rats CANNOT be created only imitated

or am i talking bollocks?

Im guessing a few of my bikes Ive had dont really fit into the pidgeon hole 'rat' as I deliberately painted them or changed parts but I really couldnt care what category they fit into because I just make my bikes how I like them fitting whatever I like & painting it whatever colour I like I just try to make them look mean & as long as I like them thats all that matters.
To me the easiest term for them is rats but Ive recently discovered that the rat scene now has purists & rules on what is or isnt a rat & to me that just seems to go against what Ive always believed rat bikes were about so Im going to nominate a category for us 'deliberate ratters' & that category is 'Antisocial Bikes' because they usually are pretty antisocial & most shiney bikes wont park anywhere near my bikes but thats how I like it if it pisses someone off Im happy

Who agrees? Antisocial Bikes anyone?

What is a rat? I thought they evolved rather than get built, no rules, they just happen. The purists need a slap and attacking with some matt black...

I remember seeing a rat at the Hot Otter several years ago. That bike was what would be classed as a pure rat. The genny failed so a chunk was cut out of the frame and a car battery installed to get more mileage. The gear selector snapped so a spanner and a bolt were welded in its place, hopefully the oil seal never blew. Basically it was kept on the road by the cheapest possible means, cosmetically shit but the ingenuity to keep it on the road was simple yet brilliant, that's a rat.

Rats aren't my thing but I hate the 'built rats'. Except the rat that Chazz posted, I like that just for sheer fun factor.

My fellow brother has a rat trike and the difference between a rat and a custom is how much you can afford. If my mate could afford a new tank, paintjob,it's setup he would and it would be a custom but he can,t so whatever tank that'll fits spray can finish and a rear axle from a 25 quid reliant we dragged out a field . It dosnt win any beauty contests but it looks the nuts. Old steamer trunk for a boot and most expensive bit yet 70 quid of steel tube to remake rear end after axle snapped. Wouldn't have cost nowt ten year ago but scrap metal price has made the pikeys nick any old iron that we would have used.NOW THATS RUNNING AND KEEPING A RAT.

I agree, spot on, i say bring back proper bikes, ones that we know what they are supposed to be!

Well to me that bit of bike design advice sums up the current rat rider's psyche in one sentence.
Make it look like it's done 100,000 miles a year for the last 20yrs, without actually doing it.
As contrived as a HOG member's "easy stick on with double sided tape" chrome covers, and just as fake.
