It was certainly easier, and a happier place, when there was no middle ground. MCCs looked like rallyists and welly wangers, outlaw bikers had a big insignia on their backs, that told you they were indeed outlaw bikers, by the MC patch, and where they were from by the bottom rocker, and sometimes folk were simply totally disinterested in bravado and politics dyed in the wool bikers, like JH describes. On pulling up at Pag services for a slash and a smurk, and seeing a bunch of bikes parked up, you could plonk yourself at the table of the welly wangers, and chew the fat about how their weekend had been, and how it looked like rain, and political correctness gone mad, any old bollocks, no attitude. Were it a back patch outfit, you knew who they were, they damn sure better know who you were, they knew that they'd better come and introduce themselves, or be deemed persona non-grata, then sit with them and do talk the same shite, or if they were hostile, barge into em then call em cunts for spilling your coffee and push em about till they sloped off with their tales between their legs.
Nowadays you'll pull up at Pag, see a bunch of bikes. They may have deemed themselves 'RC' riders club, cos they're not an outlaw biker outfit, but a little bit naughtier than an MCC, a silly bloody 'Brotherhood', a three piece 'sidepatch' outfit. All bollocks. So then you gotta make a phone call to see if to give em the time of day, or hate em, or grab one and scan their jackets for support patches.
The newfangled middle-ground is wishy-washy bullshit, for people who deem themselves more hard-core than some people, but not hard-core enough to proclaim it loudly or stand up for it. It causes confusion and possibly misdirected animosity. So when your MCC, RC, Brotherhood, HRC, or whatever bullshit term you've invented for your club, is told nope, cant wear that, it's not always blind bullying and chest puffing, it's to keep things black and white(sic), and might just save your guys an uncomfortable piss stop one day.

If clubs aint your bag fine, go out and do ''Your thing'' but whats the point in trying to immitate something you dont want to be part of , unless it just to look ''Bad ass''
Cant see the point in the Triumph jacket, cant see the point in wearing a patch on your back that say's ''Lone wolf-no club'' if you dont have a patch on people know you aint in a club full stop, but even funnier is when you and a few mates all wear one and ride around together, or maybe even a patch of the internet, everyone knows you havent earned it ( un-less they're dim) and you arent proving anything.
Well apart from your willingness to throw away money and show people you dont have what it takes.

I was a member of various MCC clubs over the years. The politics was always there and I always understood what it was all about. The vast majority of the time there's no problems, everyone gets on with the important things in life like riding your bike and talking bollocks down the pub.

Life was so much easier when I started my biking life in the mid 80's. Everyone respected each other, you didn't really need to try hard to get along with other clubs. An introduction and a handshake was all it took. Things rarely got out of hand, but with the fragmentation of clubs into the plethora of RC,MCRC,BC,TRF, Brotherhoods etc ad infinitum, I got rather disenchanted with the club thing. I decided I wanted to do my own thing, just being me without having to bother with Politics or remember what particular initials could go wherever. All I want is to ride my bike wherever I like, whenever I like and I quite happily do just that.
