Default Exhaust question

I have a cbr1000 donor sat in my garage. I need to mount the rad and to sort out the exhausts. The down pipes are in good nick which is a touch. The middle section is knackered.

What is the box bit where the 4 go into 2? is it needed? I am going to have a bash at making up my own exhaust (mate has a mig welder) and I wondered inf I could go 4 into 1 without that box?

Slob, me old mucker, you need the collector to join the 4 downpipes to the single tail pipe. What make of exhaust is it?

you could make your own 4-1 collector or cheat as I did and ask Blackjack to make it for you

I build my exhausts by using preformed bends 1.5" od 1.6mm wall.

Covered the general idea, or at least one way of doing it, in this month's Shed Head.

I was doing 2-1 collectors, but it ain't rocket science to make that a 4-1...
