Default Ideas for winter hacks?

Right then, name me some bikes for a cheap winter hack please!

I need something grunty (600cc plus) that is a decent size for a lanky fat fucker.
Budget is only about 600-700 notes so I'm thinking 'unfashionable' stuff like a 750 Zephyr or plentiful stuff like 600 Bandits but am running out of suggestions to stick in eBay/Bike Trader.

Got to be insurance friendly too as I'm using my no claims on the Harley so no sportsbikes

All help gratefully received

Get a CB500, light, reliable and with crashbars, you can drop it until your hearts content and just pick it up again and ride off.

Ah yes, XK6, XJ9 good idea.

Not sure about the CB5, not overly keen on parallel twins.
Am thinking about Triumph Trident maybe, or a CB750 Shitehawk too

How about a Harley? One of those trail bikes would be ideal and you can upset the HOG lot at the same time

GS500 E.

Run one as a hack myself, burns fuck all fuel, lightwieght so its easy to pick up after a spill on ice, simple as you like, insurance is naff all. Not at all exciting, but mine serves me well for the shitty weather, got mine for 300 with MOT so they are cheap as well.

Kwak GT750.

Easy to maintain, cheap to run, shaft drive.........

There's always one on ebay, usually in a bit of a mess cosmetically, but parts are easily available and there's a wealth of knowledge on here cos several of us have them.

Kawasaki KLR650, Yamaha XT600, Honda XR600, for the cheaper end of the budget.
Honda XR650R, Husqvarna TE610, KTM LC4 650, New KLR650, Yamaha TTR600 etc etc for higher end budget.
All big thumping trailie/enduro's.
I have an XR650R, kick start only but a dirt bike that well live with most road bikes up a ton, ultra relible, wheelie like mad and are ultra cool and hold their money like nobodies business.
All bikes mentioned well stand massive abuse and mileage if oil and filters are changed regular.

tell you what you don't want to use ebay or bike trader to find one as yer in Bristol. Have a look at the Trade It website - much better and much cheaper and you won't have to bleedin' miles to see it

like this un for example - a GPX750 for about 500...

Or this 750 Spectre for 500.

Kwak 750 Spectre

It's basically a GT750 with custom styling and a virtually bullet proof motor.

Lol - thats mine, or it was until five weeks ago! - I sold the bugger and I keep getting calls about it....

(and GurnE's seen it cluttering up the forecourt at riders, and made some very rude comments about it....)

Great bike tho - when my wrists feel like they've snapped after a long ride on the Duke, I do sometimes regret letting it go...

I just hate commuting in a car though, even if it is pissing down.

Plus a car will cost me 250 to insure and 100-175 to tax where as the sort of bikes I'm looking at will cost me less than a ton to insure, 66 to tax, be better on fuel etc.

I begrudge paying 4.40 to keep a ruddy parking attendant in a job
