bio diesel you buy at certain outlets can be used with no mods at all, you can run older type diesel engines (not common rail) on old frying oil, but you need a heater to thin the fuel, and as you say extra filters.
engines with bosch injector pumps on em are the best, lucas injection pumps dont like using veg oil, it breaks the rotors in the pumps

Spot on advice here my Lucas pump went pop using this stuff and the advice I got from a mechanic mate was that this seems to be common, but not with Bosch.

I had been using it for over a year, however, and saw no difference in performance etc., but a good saving on pump prices. You need to change your fuel filter after the first tankful of Bio as it cleans a load of scum out of the tank and pipes etc left there by the Dino oil. Filters do get a bit more clogged and need changed more often. It's also useful in cold weather to mix some Dino oil (say 30%) in with the Bio as cold starting is not so good with Bio.

You can run a diesel on coconut oil Rudolf Diesel originally desined the engine to run on coal dust but was too successful....you can run a diesel on cooking fat but it's coming winter and that stuff will turn to jelly in low temperatures..and probably solidify if it gets even remotely cold ...Thats why he turned to petrochemicals for reliability........My bio fuel guru reccomends an input of white spirit......but my logical self seems to think why does all this Bio fuel crap seem to work a lot better in hot countries.......

Thers a clue in there as to why your pump went pop.

Been running on bio for about 18 months now with no problems at all. A few hundred miles after starting to use it you have to change your filter because it will strip all the crap from inside your tank.

Works in older Tranny's and up to 80% veg oil

However you do get asked for bags of chips quite often

Don't forget from April 2008 we'll all be running on bio diesel at a 5% blend in standard diesel. Make sure you change your engine oil more frequently. If you run on B5 and your oil change is 10,000 miles then reduce it to 8,000. Check the manufacturers recomendations. If you run on a 50/50 mix then half the oil change period so 10,000 miles becomes 5,000. beleive me it's worth doing.
