Default Any grinders out there?!

OK odd question for the day...

Do any of you grind your teeth? Have you had treatment for it? It looks like I might finally have found the cause of my headaches!!!! (various specialists, psychologists and a CT scan later and my NHS dentist works it out!)

He is suggesting either a mouth guard, or occlusion stuff (grinding off the bit of tooth thats catching), or both, but I am also looking at how I treat the underlying cause - I know I do it when I'm stressed, so hopefully when my referal for CBT comes through it will help, but it could be another year or so before that happens.

So what I want to know is... have you had any of the treatments for this? Do they work? Any recommendations to stop me doing it?! I actually clench more than I grind, but I do do both.

Can't really chew toffees in my sleep!

And I can definitely say speed is not the cause in this case!

Maybe some chewing gum will help, just one bit and keep it in day and night, if you find yourself chewing stop and after a while you may not need it, don't keep replacing it with a new bit, it's not for enjoyment, just therapy...John

Kylie ........your headaches will be caused by the muscles which surround your tempo mandibular joint going into spasm .....as you now know this is a symptom of grinding/clenching you teeth whilst asleep....however some folks do it when they are awake ,when they are concentrating or stressed.

Splints do help , some people are fine with just a 'soft splint' , these are the ones that look and feel like a sports gum shield .The other type are 'hard splints' ....these tend to work best for patients who tend to 'clench' AND grind.

Does your jaw 'click' when you open and close your mouth? if so then you can do TMJ exercises which help, your dentist should be able to show you what to do .

The slightly amusing (and a tad embarassing) thing is that these started since my head injury, but all the specialists have said it was just a trigger point and that aside from the initial brain injury they can find no lasting damage to the brain.... so I've been through all this, and it would seem that the stress from the injury, and the subsequent break up with ex, moving house, moving office etc has caused my teeth to go into overdrive!

Rang the dentist earlier after I spoke to the doc, and its going to be 80 for a mouth guard which is what he is recommending as a start.

So its going to be a while before i get it as I don't have 80 at the moment.

My dentist says my jaw doesnt click, he had a good feel of it yesterday, but when he presses on the joint it absolutely kills.

if you go to a sports shop they sell kits so you can produce your own sports gum shield ...ie its a piece of rubber that you 'heat up ' in boiling water , you then mould it yourself to fit your teeth ...the instructions are normally quite easy ...................perhaps try one for a week or so ...it may help.

you will wreck your teeth if you don't sort it out. I have seen the damage clenching & grinding can do.
& when you lose your teeth due to way too much pressure & they give way, it speeds the remaining teeth breakage up, until you have none, then you will have even worse problems with No teeth, as your jaw tries to grind & clench without any teeth there Y'can't sleep with your falsies in

get a gum shield type thing made-80 is better than endless pain from your jaw & teeth.
only other option is to remove the stress causing the clenching & grinding.

This is my preferred option but unfortunately I havent managed to get my neighbours evicted as yet, and I still need to work.

I'll get a mouth guard next month or something as soon as i have enough cash

Of course this leaves you open to the stress of having to pay 80...and didn't the dentist say "for a start"....don't you have any friends who work in the crematorium... John

You will have to wait a year for CBT? Local bike training schools over this way can do 'em in a day!
