Solution? New battery, it had enough amps to spin it but not the voltage because of a dead cell (e.g. 10.5 volts) now the dreams ignition needed 12.5 or more volts to start, so the battery had no chance, but if you bumped it the spinning alternator gave it enough juice (added to the battery) to start, and once spinning fast enough it ran fine.... guess how long it took me to figure that one out....?
I suspect if you put a meter across the battery it will show a low voltage, get it running and check the voltage with the lights on/off - indicators going and I bet it will drop below the crucial 10.5.
on the way back to the yard now, so I shall try that, good thinking sir

My battery used to turn the bike over and over and not start but would jump off the car a treat and it turned over much faster. Not had any bother since i got a new battery - even after leaving her to stand for a few weeks which was always the problem before.

cheked the voltage and its fine, on/off lights on/off ect ect, but as always, the problems gone to bed till the next time, i will look at getting a bigger battery on it

the problem of the fuel seams to have stemmed from a blocked cap vent and i little turn up on the carbs

so many many thanks folks, your all diamonds

might have found the root of the problem by accident today.........
i park the bike in the wharehouse, so its not in the elements ect and due to the fact that she dont like the damp too much.....well one of the lads moved it today and decided that in his wisdom that he would turn the fuel tap to prime, thinking that he turned the fuel off, well it did'nt, but it did drop a quarter of tank of juice on the deck in 2 hours and completely 'primed
' the piston chambers up with petrol, to such a pressure the bike woul'nt turn over ( thanks for thye advice bad toad, again my ole fruit bat, your a star), a trip round the garage, plugs out and a turn over sorted that out, the fucker went like a geeser...................

so it was bad toad that mentioned that the primer might be the problem, that it is sticking to on and that when the bike is at rest, ie at lights ect, its filling the pots up quicker than they can ignite the fuel and stalling the bike....the problem is now this, the gs500e (j plate) has 2 fuel taps, one on the side in the normal place with prime, on and reserve on it, but the fuel on/off is under the tank and can only be got at with a screwdriver, meanin that you can never turn the fuel off without a lot of fuckin about...........so can i bypass the 'primer' and have just the one tap, nice and easy, on/off/reserve or do i have to have the primer............if the primer is stuck open, then thats not to much of a problem as i have another set of carbs on the way
and if i can bypass the primer and use one tap, can they be picked up off the shelf so i dont have to replace the tank..........

any ideas please

You may have to fit a high flow fuel tap and larger bore fuel piping.

no he wont! its already flooding due to the tap being fecked!
kkm the on/off under the tank shuts off the fuel to the main tap so you can take the tank off! without having to drain it! get yer float hights set up and a new tap and all should be tickitty boo!

Lightbulb cowboy tradition.........

Me I'd want to gaurantee it was the prime bit.

Fuel tap probs mean I use a small mole grip on fuel line.voila,no fuel flow.

Should just be able to get a tap over haul kit.Breakers should do a tap cheapo.

Evilbay could hold the answer.

Hope youv'r found the gremlin thats been haunting you

Cheers,

Drew

rightio, here we go again.....
put he new carbs on and guess what, they don't fuckin work, I cannot get the bike to fire up, so I strapped the old set on and then.....brooom, it works, so I have taken the old set into work and cleaned all the crud out of them and there was a lot of crud!, so all I need to do now is strap them bak on, possibly saturday the earliest, which is fuckin frustrating having to use the car for work and sitting in traffic on the way home, but what I could do with, is if possible someone to post me a diagram of where the fuel lines go from the carbs the first fuel switch and then to the secound fuel tap, just incase I have fucked up there, once the bike is back up and running I will strip the other carbs and if anyone needs a set of carbs for a gs500e, give me a pm, just pay for the postage, so any help would be gratefull please folks.....also mr dracken, if you read this, give me a price for a new tap for the gs please, will try and pm you later as well
