I'm afraid I agree with that, if you build a bike and want to enter it in a show, it should be ridden there, allowances should be made for distance travelled, ie: surface dirt, or if it's a big show, bike cleaning facilities, but also there could be a trailored bike class for any new bike with 0 miles on the clock...best of the new bikes from the big manufacturers could be included in this..I've seen bikes win awards at bike shows that don't start or run...Nothing wrong with having a few extra classes..but putting a trailored bike in the same class as a working bike, and judging on how shiney the bike looks, is not what I would call fair..John

Absolutely agree with this..

Been a pet peeve of mine for years, that folk trailer or take a bike to a show in a van, park round the corner, and ride the last 1/2 mile in. absoulte bollox.

I lost a show at Worksop years back with an old XS650 chop, that was ridden everywhere, and as i rode home i saw the winning bike put back in a van not 1/ a mile up the from from the pub..

Taff idea sounds good to me... let em think they have won summat, name em on stage in front of everyone and give em a spare wheel for their trailer or van and tell em to feck off..

Good on you for riding your bike all the way there and back...

Things have gone full circle, this pathetic trend ground to a halt once in the early 80's with the appearance of the Kent Show, all bikes must be ridden to show being a stipulation. And those that hadn't been, being disallowed from the show. Unfortunately it reared it's head once again with the demise of that show, taking us to the embarassing situation now whereby the bikes are built, not to look cool, but the most important requirement for 'this years show-winner' is something that hasn't been done before, regardless of how downright f˙cking stupid it may look, and how inferior it may be as A Motorcycle.
When i used to do bike shows, i used to love the Bulldog and the Farmyard, because there was no show, so the nice bikes that were there, were ridden there because the owner wanted to f˙cking party, and the ones that were conspicuous by their absence, told their own tale about the owner.
Packed in regularly putting my bike in shows, when i realised that the builders with with whom i had a friendly rivalry, were spending the in-between weekends when i never saw them, at car shows trying to get the best-bike trophy, and not stopping the night cos there was another show on the Sunday elsewhere, or similar such insignificant nonsense, when i was gunning my occasional show winner two up thru the Alps, or unpacking a tent off it up the Yorkshire Dales.
And i still do the same, and so do they. It's just that the photo album of my biking life doesn't consist of me shaking hands with some goon while accepting a trophy, it consists of my bike and me and my mates, here, there, and every f˙cking where, lost, broke down, pulled up, you know, real f˙cking stuff.

I still prefer to go walkabout of the site to see the proper bikes. There are usually better bikes not entered and often while talking to the owner, a crackin story can be found behind each mod, especially the rat bikes.

It's only a matter of time before it goes all "Gwynneth Paltrow" at the presentations:

Sounds right Taff...never thought about it before..but breaking down is a part of biking..you feel a plonker when your pride and joy breaks down...especially the first time...but then later, It's something to talk about over a beer or two, and suddenly you realize that every other biker has a story to tell about the last or first time they broke down....John

Feels f˙cking good when somebody else breaks down and you've got the tools, the bits, and the knowledge to get 'em rolling again though.

Thought so anyway, till i was a prospect, and a large particularly horrible member sat by me halfway thru europe as the only prospect riding to Switzerland with 21 members, and said; "Now then prospect. Every time someone breaks down, you're there, you got the tools, and you got the know how, you ain't scared to get your hands dirty, and they're soon up and rolling. And we been thru France, so you spoke french and got us all hotels, we're in Germany now so you're doing it in german.
Yep, you're really starting to get on my f˙cking tits"...

A simple answer to at least cutting down the ornaments would be to insist on an MOT certificate and road tax for all entries...at least that would weed out the ones with no pistons/suspension/wiring..John

Do away with 'Best in Show'

The thing is that having to show that they're roadworthy and capable of doing a run wouldn't stop them from being trailered/vanned there, would it? It's not that most of these things don't work ('cos most of them do), it's that people take 'em there in vans/trailers - that's the problem.

The bikes that won 'Best Chop' and 'Best Lowrider' at the weekend both run - I know, I've photographed them and got riding shots of both. In fact, the guy with the lowrider was doing rolling burnouts for the camera ... Likewise, the big orange thing that won 'Engineering' also works - he rode it away from the Bum In Tne Mud the week before. Whether he stopped down the road and put it in a van is something we'll never know.

The problem isn't people entering non-running bikes in shows - it's people not riding them there, and I don't know how you're ever going to stop that.

the problem is that what used to be bike shows for bikes, i.e - a motorcycle that can be ridden, has changed to `show off your latest radical creation that will never be able to be ridden apart from up a ramp in 1st gear┤ shows. the C.E.M.A. bike has a 110cu/i rev tech motor and a 6 speed box. it will never engage more than 1st.

anyone with an ounce of creativity can imagine something totally out there, and some can actually create it, and as i┤ve posted before, bloody good luck to them if they can, but it takes the piss when a beautifully built ROAD bike gets passed by in the judging for an unrideable work of art.

i had 2 bikes in faro last year. one was a chop, the other a cbx lowrider streetfighter thingy. i knew i didn┤t stand a hope in hell of getting anywhere (the painter fucked the paintwork totally and we didn┤t have time to re-do it), but just entered for the sheer fuckery of being able to. we had to van the cbx due to it eating it┤s wiring loom the night before, but it ran and the owner entered it knowing it stood no chance but wanted the kudos of having been shown (he did however take it out on the road for a blast, and ended up getting persued by the local plod. no lid, no papers ). the chop was ridden down, sheared it┤s n║ plate support half way, and the owner did the last 400kms with the plate on the back of his cutoff.

other entrants (like the bloke from england with that beautiful black lowrider with the chrome frame) that were in with a chance, rode their bikes a lot of miles, but didnt get a look in due to a lot of trailer machines (charlie was a good exception thankfully). sorry, for me not right.

like i said, i entered for the sheer fun of it, and it was a great ego trip, but there was several superb road bikes there that deserved more recognition and didn┤t get a look in.

Hey Erizo, no personal offense taken here
And now that i rewied all the thread, maybe i shouldn't be the one who went too strongly on the word "rage", i guess we're a bit on the defensive side and exagerate things , it was quite fair as a start.
You must admit, though, that when you're the "target" and hear the bullets wistling around you you feel worse than when you're shooting from the sniper position
No offense taken at all, this chat is being quite interesting and educative for me and i thank you all for your straight opinions.
