Until you get used to it try to keep 4 to 6 seconds behind the vehicle in front..with the duff ankle maybe you should try floorboards and a heel toe gear change.

Ride to the middle of your lane or car riders will keep you riding over the drains, change down to 2nd or third gear as you come into roundabouts or unknown curves and rev up as you ride out.. don't forget to ride slowly in the curves for the first 100 miles to wear the edges of the tyres in and remove the shine..

It's not a racing bike it is a bike to look cool on, you have nothing to prove and you won't win any races on it so don't try.
