Carb set up
 
I'm getting a very non standard GS1000 tomorrow and it does run ok ish, but the carbs need setting up on a dyno really, big bore and modified head with pod filters and a non standard exhaust. Think they are bandit carbs too

Its all relatively easy and quick these days with fuel injection and plugging it into the computer but I need someone who understands those old fashioned carb things.

I know its how long is a piece of string, but anyone you would recommend and any idea of time and costs they would charge???

Providing the jetting is OK, i always just used a set of vacuum gauges to get the slides and idle balanced, if you need to find the jetting that its a PITA and trial an error...or a dyno, but they where a rarity when i used to swap bits,
Spent ages fitting a set of GSXR carbs to my Z650, worked well but i never did get them spot on.

I set my GS up using the following method, standard GS carbs, pod filters with homemade exhaust:

Mixture screws 1 1/4 turns out then colourtune to make sure.

Mercury guage to balance the banks, mine was set up originally for running with an airbox so the outers were pulling less vacuum than the inners, brought them all inline.

Never bothered with a Dyno as she's running sweet as it is.

Turns out they are GS carbs not bandit ones, ....... might make it a bit easier

Found a local shop that does set ups on the dyno and he is used to tuning carbs, not only plug in fuel injections stuff, decided that will be so much easier than try on the road/fiddle, try on the road/fiddle etc on the road myself.

Ah but now I have a professional fiddler, makes all the difference apparently. though it does remind me of once upon a time when dinosaurs ruled the earth and I was accused of being a tit fiddler, think I was about 15 :D:D

How did you get on?

I've fully rebuilt/serviced the carbs and they are now back on the bike so I will need the fueling set up spot on.
Stock carbs with a hybrid stage 1 Dynojet kit for the other mods, plus PiperX pod filters and a Vance & Hines 4 into 1 megaphone set up.

I've disconnected all the emissions kit because its pointless on an old bike.
There's an outfit in Wellingborough that do dyno set up for bikes, but I don't know if they are ok. They dyno cars as well but they've recently set a unit for bikes.

Made these blanking plates for the exhaust gas return to the airbox.
They replace the OE reed valves.

Its gone in today, will pick it back up next weekend, it has a dynojet kit fitted too ........... looking forward to getting it back

All sorted but of course it was pissing down of rain riding back:rolleyes:

Main jets were changed as far too big, and mixtures played with, ended up with just under 80bhp at the back wheel which is fine by me, for a 38 year old bike its ok
