just how stong are the suzuki GS motors??
 
I just spoke with a guy thats got a GS850, wants next to not a lot for it, had lots of money spent on it over the years, he had it since early 90's.

its parked up and not running now after a year of being in his mums garage

thing is that the speedo died and fell apart just after 100k miles, its now well in excess of that

is there much chance of the motor still being any good, he said it always been looked after, mainly long runs, his daily commuter for many years

old guy that wouldnt have been thrashing it

mate had one of them. in the chopper club . put serious miles on it no bother.

as they say, bullet proof engines, but as with anything it all depends what ya gonna do with it,if ya gonna simply stick it in a frame and ride,then a decent overhaul before hand wont go amiss, but I wouldn't be going down a dragstrip on it anytime soon,lol.

biggest problems with the gs motors was the charging systems
the regulators where chocolate fireguards a good superdream reg always works well

Great motors - charging system can play up, but very strong.

Carb diaphragms can be replaced with ones from NRP Carbs for lots less than stock 'uns.

Drop the oil, do the valve clearances and it'll be right as. :)

I'm an old guy and I thrash every bike I own..I reckon 60,000 miles is about the useful average life of any bike.

Shows how wrong you are then, doesn't it? Had plenty of bikes with well over that - XJ650 with over 250,000; EXUP1000 with over 150,000, Future Bike had done more than 120,000 on the SOHC 750 motor before it finally popped,; Changeling engine over 100,000.

I also know of an XJ750 that, last time I saw it a few years ago, that was at 875,0000 and the owner was aiming for a million.

roller crank gs motors are monumentally well built. to a standard that has just never been bettered since. these bikes were built to last forever. the roller bearing cranks are well nigh unburstable, and as has been said, their only weakness is the charging system, but most will have been sorted by now anyhow. they can sometimes get rattly top ends due to camshaft endfloat, but this isnt more than an inconvenience, they start rattling from the cam endfloat, and 50 thousand miles later theyre still rattling. if the price is right, buy it, change the oil every 1500 miles using a cheap mineral oil and it will see you to the end of your days!!

think you lot have persuaded me to take a chance on it, if I can get it running, then its ideal cheap quick hardtail trike build, then knock it out on ebay, make myself some money

my mate dispatches on gs650 kats and runs them up to 250 thousand miles ish before changing them for another!

good old bikes the gs engines

very strong and last for ages,

i've just sold a ratty gs1100 shafty, great hack/rat/rally bike

got another camo gs1100 shafty up for sale soon.
ooo big spots,high muddy, small tank, and apes

In the early 80s i ran a gs1000 (with katana bodywork ) that was bored out to 1238cc, big cams, prostock ported head ,smoothbore mikunis, 14.5 : 1 compression etc etc and it had 8bhp less than the yoshimura works bikes it used to run high nines on the strip and even ran it on methanol a couple of times and i only ever managed to blow the motor up once (150mph on the m18 heading for donnington :D
So fairly safe to say gs motors can take a licking and keep on ticking if you dont fuck with them too much

run most stuff over the last 50yrs, but fora cheap reliable bike i'd go for a g.s. every time.check out electrics world if you have trouble with the charging system:thumbsu:

Quick tip for electrics
 
On the gs if you dont run lights all the time disconnect one of the alternator leads there are 3 all the same colour going to the regulator ,it will stop the alternator going tits up and overheating had more gs than hot dinners.

Does this littany of wonderfulness apply to the GSX too? Cos I've just got a GSX750 chop. 1981 vintage.

gsx 750 motor is reliable enough, but not in the same league as the gs and the gsx1100, the gsx 750 has a shell bearing crank where the 1100 and the gs range have roller bearing cranks. thats not to say the gsx750 motor has any inherrent faults, its a great motor, but not like its big brother.

Only other pic i've got (1983 ish) ,must be a lateish photo as the bike has gsx 250 clocks on as some tosser had stolen the katana speedo by then (bastards)

all of the above, but if its been stood and petrol NOT drained dont feck about trying to clean them your self - just get them ultrasonically cleaned - a lesson i learned teh bloody hard way.

engines bullet proof ( ok ive had a few probs with my gs1000) but nothing major.

I dumped the std electonic ig system and put points on mine - purely because i prefur points and can 99% of the time be bodged or replaced and get you home if any problems.

I got a gel battery on mine - that not only spins the motor over quicker but the bike seems to start easier as well.

Im still running original reg/rec unit without any issues

cant fault them just look around how many are still on the road and triked.
