Nightster

Read the local press review of the Harley Nightster.

They liked it, but had quality issues.

But reading the figures I just kept laughing....

1200cc engine - My dragstar 650cc
50bhp - dragstar 43/44bhp
100mph topspeed - Dragstar 100mph topspeed
Ģ6,695 - Dragstar Ģ5500

How can a 1200cc engine be so sh*t?

Hillbilly Deluxe 28-03-2008 09:56 AM

re-sale value ?
availability of aftermarket spares/tuning bits ?

shaggy696969 28-03-2008 09:59 AM

You buy the Label ........ The same way a BMW driver does.

nightster looks cool- dragstar looks like it's trying to be cool

:D :D :D :D

Hillbilly Deluxe 28-03-2008 11:31 AM

nightster - cool - made out of metal - easy spares availability for ever
dragqueen - a motorcycle - plastic - ????

madastoast 28-03-2008 11:42 AM

nightster = sportster in dark colours = been around for 51 years

dragstar = sportster copy = been around for a lot less :D

Taff 28-03-2008 11:45 AM

Fifteen years later;

Drag Queen:- In a pile of unwanted bits in a breakers someplace, with 25,000 miles on it. Dead.
Shítster:- Still somebody's pride and joy. Been round Europe 6 times, just needs an oil change for the next trip over. Done 100,000 miles. Starts first time every time.

That'll be with the stock pipes and US emissions setup. Be interesting to know what it puts out with the ubiquitous Stage 1 Kit.

Now I'm in desperate need of a bit of tinkering meself. Bloody bikes get more tinkering than I ever get or am ever likely to get unless I find myself a very fit toy boy with lots of tinkering experience. :D :D

Bassman 28-03-2008 01:32 PM

People buy a Harley because of the longevity, resale value, availability of parts to change it to anything you want it to be..not meant to be a sports bike... but can be made into one if you want...

If folk don't mind riding around on an poor imitation pretend Harley .. no problem ..buy a Dragstar... :p

Nick 28-03-2008 01:56 PM

You can't reduce the performance of a bike to a couple of figures. The difference in performance between the two is considerable. The little Sporty pulls like a train, the Dragstar doesn't. When some (unt got in my garage and took me ignition barrel out before getting disturbed, a mate lent me his Dragstar for the week to get to work on. Now as incredibly grateful as I was, and as pleasant a ride as it was (and it was), the motor's got nowt, it's absolutely gutless. Regardless of who makes it or what the figures are, the H*rley is a better bike by a mile.

erizo 28-03-2008 02:15 PM

oh dear, another rice versus pork thread.

itīs different strokes for different folks really. some people want a jap cruiser (as in a bike of that type, not an imitation, in the same way as a `blade not an imitation of an R1 but another type of sportsbike) or feel that the price of a harley canīt be justified.

i ride a yam cruiser, not because i want a harley (i donīt), nor because i canīt afford one (i could buy one tomorrow). i bought it because after riding various harleys over the years and then trying the yam, the yam ticked more boxes for my needs, so i bought it.

some of the clients i get in here have a yearning for a harley, and as a kid have dreamed of owning one. when they ask if they should, i say yes. if there is a possibility of realising a dream, do it, as in this life those chances are very few and far between.

my current and only criticism of harleys at the moment is that theyīre WAAAAY overpriced. other than that, i enjoy riding them no more nor less than jap cruisers.

as for the longevity of jap cruisers, amoungst my clients i have 2 500 vulcans with over 90,000 miles, 2 vulcan 800īs with over 100,000 miles, 1 drag star 650 with 80,000 miles, 1 drag star 1100 with 90,000 miles, and a virago 1100 that snapped itīs speedo cable a few years back, so we donīt know exactly how many miles it has, but itīs over 110,000 minimum.

dead in 25,000 miles?........donīt think so!

Here is my baby, I love her, she's 19, and done 38,000, her name is Betty, and I aint asking for anyone to pick on her, as it aint her fault she weren't born a Harley, but if she was, I wouldn't own her, coz i can't afford a Harley... would I want one....Hell yeah.

I think 78.9lbs/ft vs 37 lbs/ft are the more relevant figures myself?

I've ridden plenty of 1200 Sportys including the Nightster and a fair few Drag Queens too and I can promise you its the Yamaha which is over priced. ;)

i wouldnīt say overpriced, but deffo underpowered (the new 650 with cat now makes LESS than 30bhp  )

i would prefer to ride the 1200 sporty over the xv650 for fun quality, although due to my stature on both i look like an orang utan shagging a pushbike.

Well slap me with a wet fish. I'm gobsmacked I really am. Is that NIK priasing a Harley???? or is it an impersonator :D :D

shaggy696969 28-03-2008 04:58 PM

The Dragstar is underpowered dramatically considering its size. I like what you can do to a 1200 sporty, their just physically too small for me. Harleys are becoming more commonplace thanks to the likes of the Discovery channel and the fact that Japs are outpricing themselves. If only the Americans could put more quality into their bikes, QC is crap on em, they have improved the engine over the years but still build isoff for the money as is the technology used. Ohh and cuctom spares for Jap stuff is now outstriping the HD stuff. Even the yanks are getting in on the act for what they call the Metric crusier market.

errrr excuse me Sir, but you did say Harleys are overpriced. And I would argue the point. Jap cruisers are plastic. drop it and you do loads of damage Harleys are solid as a rock, drop it and ok you might get a few scratches, but your bike wont be written off. Even with my limited knowklege of the mechanics and technical specifications etc., of bikes, I do know quality when I see and I cannot find a bike to match the Harley for quality, with the possible exception of the stock seats which are pretty crap.

I've ridden loads of Jap cruisers and they just dont excite me like a Harley. There's no oomph and they sound like a wet fart. Thats my opinion and I'm sticking to it. :D

CB begs your pardon Sir :o

dracken1 28-03-2008 06:20 PM

My 1400 intruder has had engine mods and has some stomp from a stand still.
but a sorted 1200 sporty with the emission crap taken off it. will stay with me right the way to 100 :)

Pugwash 28-03-2008 06:43 PM

I'm still getting over Taff making a positive comment about a Sportster...

bird 28-03-2008 07:23 PM

The Nightster I tested for a week (The one gurnE rode I reckon, with a screamin eagle kit and vance and hines pipes) was the funkiest damn motorcycle I've ever ridden.

Not the best.

Not the nicest.

Not the most comfortable, or the fastest, or the most practical.

But it was the coolest goddamn piece of tinware I've ever slung me leg over.

If I had the money I'd have one like a shot.

And I don't even like Harleys.
