Its not a problem using led's they are super bright, I've seen it done, PM Dracken I expect he can sort you out with the colours you need.

had a look in maplins ( we have 1 local ), look ok, but do they need a board or can you just wire them in ?

also do they have to be named ? ie neutral / high beam

critch 14-02-2006 09:36 PM

motorcycle storehouse stock em i think vehicle wiring products too

mankys just fitted some to my wifes trike for number plate illumination they sell lots of coloured leds on evil bay too

unclefester 14-02-2006 09:48 PM

Just mount em on whatever and wire em up. Long leg is positive if memory serves

does anyone know if they have to be named though for an MOT ?

shaggy696969 14-02-2006 10:17 PM

nope they dont

dracken1 14-02-2006 10:23 PM

i could be wrong but i don't believe you even need idiot lights for an mot. possibly indicator ones if indicators fitted.

don't ya just wish you'd gone for the 60mm speedo now with the idiot leds built in. :D :D

or lets say you already had a couple of 48mm guages then this would look nice between them wink wink

or a little more street fighterish

We use RS Components at work for modem units, you might find that the LED lugs are different colours, the coppery one being +ve, if you have a problem with LEDs failing (Greens are less reliable for some reason) then stick a resistor inline on the +ve. I think we use 360 ish Ohm. use heatshrink to protect the connections. You can get with a 'glue' inside which seals all when you heatshrink.

Nice shiney bits, no good for rat bikes lol :D

Ive got that acewell digital one, real nice bit of kit

if going for LED then check to ensure that they are 12V ones, they will have built in resistor to limit the current to the LED, also check the viewing angle and ensure that when mounted they are pointing prety much at you, or you might not be able to see them properly when lit.

re-idiot lights
Got a blue led recessed into spot light shell for main beam(cos I forgetr it is on) and red one for oil on the other side-no oil very bad

Pushbike speedo illuminated by two tiny leds from inside-lots of buggering about-wot does sealed unit mean, tee, hee :D

Good luck in your quest!

Strictly speaking, for the MOT you require the following:-

Main beam warning lamp - usually in Blue - visible from riding position

If you have indicators, you must be able to see them flashing from the riding position or have a warning lamp - usually Green.

I also like to have a neutral indicator and an oil pressure warning lamp, but these are not compulsory.

passed MOT with orange for high beam (no blue to hand), it sits out of sight behind me left leg along with a green neutral light - MOT dude was fine with that
