Chilli's ?

I've been to this chilli farm just outside Bedford and it was bloody good !
We did the raw chilli testing and it was very interesting !!!!!!
I dropped out before the final chilli which was the Dorset Naga.
After 6 or 7 different chillis I managed a centimetre square of raw green habanero. Yeah it was hot enough !!!!
Even me breathing through my nose burned the inside of my nose.
That was enough.

A great place and now online if anyone likes fresh chilli's? and guys they have the current worlds hottest chilli pepper: the Carolina reaper !!!
So many million million scovilles. After a million there's not too much point counting.

We love fresh chillis or pickled and use plenty of them in most things.
I know these guys and they are good !

I'll be trying the Reaper in Texas in about 5 and a half weeks.

I've had the Naga Scorpion (followed by about a gallon of milk)

That's just down the road from me, might have to take a look!!!

What, Texas?

Friar Tuck 19-09-2016 06:45 AM

There used to be the Chilli farm down on the A140 from Norwich, not sure if they are still there. That's another good place to try if they are.

There are a few chilli festivals worthy of taking a look at Inc Benington

If anyone is considering growing their own its best to start your seeds before Xmas, I have a heated (hotbed) sandbox and CFL grow lights for this purpose.

But as soon as the frosts have passed its safe to plant em outside

I'm impressed! Do you start your seeds off one in a pot from go or do a few in a pot and then split out? Is it best to start them indoors?

Peirre 20-09-2016 08:53 AM

The 3 main varieties of chillies have varying germinating times, some will pop up in days others take weeks to germinate. So figure out which type you want to grow do you homework & then take it from there.
I had a head start because I built a heated propogator sand box https://youtu.be/wwkGXEatKSk albeit a smaller one (1200x600) with a 12m parasene soil warming cable & thermostat.
I used 20 cell (half) plug trays with clear lids sat directly onto the wet sand, which enabled me to produce around 360 plugs of various veg Inc tomatoes. Germinating them seperately in plug trays meant that there was less root damage when I pricked them out & potted them on into 4" pots so only a dozen or so of the 360 failed. I wouldn't sow seeds direct into larger pots as the plant will expel its energy making the root ball rather than growing upwards, potting on in stages into slightly larger pots is recommended. With plants ending up in 10-40ltr pots. Non of the plants went outside until April / may due to the risk of frost,
I actually sat the sandbox on top of the bath and hung the grow light from the shower rail :o This enabled me to get a 1-2 month head start on other allotment veg growers. I now have 1.5m long grow tent that I can use to propogate my pepper seeds in next year, but I intend to build a modified sandbox to fit in the tent as the original ones too big, then shove it all out of the way.

You could use the Dutch bucket method https://youtu.be/nXy32Dr4Z4A
Or go really low tech hydroponics https://youtu.be/8eMt3kCUYnw

Sir Ewok 20-09-2016 12:12 PM

any way you would grow ganja is ok for most veggies, grow tents, grow lights, extractor fans etc. Don't worry about the fuzz knocking on your door as their is no real smell with peppers etc.

I used to start my plants in a cupboard in single plugs, just like PoB but without the sand box, I used another grow light to create heat and light. Once they had formed their second proper leaf I then transfered them to blocks and into the tent with hydroponic feeding. To grow vegetation using hydroponics just look on any growing site. Also some good books for free if you have an E-reader.

Peirre 20-09-2016 04:14 PM

The price of grow Tents (for veg growing ...honest guv) has dropped considerably and a tent around 1.5(h)x1.2(w)x0.6(d) in size can be had for 30+ on eBay.
CFL lamp kits ain't too expensive either for example a 125w 6400k kit Inc wing reflector http://www.green-lamp.co.uk/reflecto...ue-bundle.html (the same vendor sells on eBay but charges more), try to avoid the newer LED lamp kits as they don't seem to get as good results as the CFL. So far I've avoided the need for a fan kit, but that may change.
The sand box actually provided the moisture reqd as well as heat, encouraging the plants to form good roots, and avoided the risk of stem Rot which an be an issue when surface watering. The black buckets I use also have a length of white plastic pipe through the compost that goes down to the bottom, along with 2" of pea gravel creates a water reservoir, and I just pour water in the tube. There's also several 5mm holes in the buckets 2" from the base so any excess water runs out, stopping the plant becoming waterlogged. It also means there's no standing water with the buckets sat in to attract mosquitos

Blimey! I'm lost for words....

Peirre 21-09-2016 06:52 AM

I suspect that EW&T enterprises will be venturing chilli farming?
With chilli beer & chilli cider production to follow?

Sir Ewok 21-09-2016 01:26 PM

When I propagated I stood the plugs in water to avoid surface water and stem rot....

We already have a Chilli product on our website Ewokandtuck.co.uk which are Chilli toilet wipes, when you wipe your but you wipe your troubles away.... also good for removing varnish and overspray.....

Two things here:

You need to stop propagating... That's illegal...

And secondly:

if you pull out the plug won't the water drain away?

He came in and asked to go to 'Nam, so we sent him to Dagen'Nam! He didn't have enough dough to go to Totten'Nam!

The only reason he go to the Phillippines, is because Ewok put the wrong post code into the Twat Nag!

The metro is a popular news site Friar. Nothing dodgy or dangerous ffs.

That's almost the same story as they printed last year.
Besides it's the Carolina Reaper Chilli, not the California
Hopefully I'll have some plug plants spare around Feb / March when I've planted the seeds I've got. ATM I'm over winterising a couple of ghost chilli, and Borg 9 plants
