Killed it

The honda that is :(

Pretty sure it dropped a valve, as the grinding, squealing sound from the engine did not sound good at all

Not got any savings, so gonna be off the road for quite a while now :(

Oh well, had a good weekend anyway......

Laters.

Grav 02-08-2006 09:47 PM

Ouch, is it fixable or haven't you investigated it yet?

Spike 02-08-2006 09:50 PM

Not looked, but from the sound, and the way it was running, im sure its terminal :(

Grav 02-08-2006 09:51 PM

Are you at home or at Wombles?

Spike 02-08-2006 09:54 PM

Home, happened 5 miles from campsite, so Womble and Mad Dave went to site, unloaded, and Womble towed me to the site

Got big van with the flashing lights home :o

Grav 02-08-2006 09:59 PM

650 motor innit?

Spike 02-08-2006 10:09 PM

Yup, CB650 custom, W reg (if this helps)

Grav 02-08-2006 10:16 PM

I shall have a look round, see whats available.

Spike 02-08-2006 10:18 PM

Cheers Grav :)

If it's just a valve, can you not pull it apart yourself and then get someone else to put the new valve in (if you can't do it)? The price that a shop'll charge for doing the complete job is mostly labour for pulling it apart and putting it back together again.

Haynes manual and a top end gasket set. ;)

Grav 03-08-2006 03:22 PM

Here's a thought mate. Will a CB 750 F2 motor fit? I reckon the 650 motor is rare as rocking horse droppings so it might be worth thinking about fitting the bigger motor.

Just a thought

Big Pete 03-08-2006 04:18 PM

more likely that a 550 motor will fit, as (I believe) the 650 is a bored (and stroked?) 550/4. PLus the 750 will need an oil tank and associated plumbing fitting somewhere.

worth taking the top off for a look, or if you have access to a compression tester that will give you a clue

Spike 03-08-2006 05:27 PM

Gonna remove its head tomorrow, and have a look

Grav 03-08-2006 06:44 PM

That's the spirit Spike, whip the head of it. :D

I did wonder if it was that way round but couldn't be sure either way.

Cheers Pete. :)

I used to have a German Import 650 - not compatible at all with the english version for some reason, so make sure you haven't got one of them...

pyro 03-08-2006 08:03 PM

I agree with Nik I bought one that had dropped a valve for 200 a few years back, vgc, bought it on the wednesday, took it apart, bought valve on thursday put it back together, rode to Kent custom on friday. did 28000 on it before I flogged it, really is not difficult.

OK, have took tappet covers off, and i *may* have found the problem, or at least one of them...

The photo is crap (off my mobile) but it has a round, stepped bit of metal wedged under the tappet adjustment screw !!

I have NO idea how it got there, and its wedged real tight, i've tried turning the crank to wiggle it loose, but its not working, and idea's ??

rob 04-08-2006 06:30 PM

ask it nicely....
threaten it......
then beat fuck out of it with a big hammer :D :D

seriously tho, can you not get a biggish pry-bar under the rocker arm to compress the spring right down, and hook it out with something??

Sorry there abit big !!

The other question is, WTF is it, and HTF did it get there

Grav 04-08-2006 06:51 PM

Take the rocker cover off completely and compare it to the other side.

Spike 04-08-2006 06:54 PM

Cheers Grav :)

Big Pete 04-08-2006 10:21 PM

its kind of hard to tell but it looks a bit like a valve spring retainer  You weent ragging the motor when it went pop were you? Like, into the red zone?

Spike 05-08-2006 11:10 AM

i was just plling away, so it was preety high revs, and im off to Manchester today, so bike wont be touched now till Monday, cheers for all the advice folks :)

Spike 24-08-2006 04:15 PM

OK, some more pics for you all. just gonna post the link things, as there quite big.

As ya can see in the pics, the rocker has broke, and the funny round bit is what held(?) the springs on, and i have no idea where the big round bit has gone !
