I do it like that... the best method is to ensure that your shin is level with the chain as you look up toward sthe fromnt sproket... any long hair should not be tied up at this point.

Urban Terrorist 25-09-2006 03:41 PM

I do it that was as well, if your dumb enough to shove your fingers in it, tough bloody ****!!

With the engine off! Use your other hand to rotate the wheel.

I have a scar on my middle finger owing to a chain/sprocket interface whilst oiling the chain on my pedal bike when I was about 5 years old. I remember screaming like a banshee as my dad pinned me down and scraped the oil out of the wound with cotton buds. Didn't bloody do it again, I can tell ya.

Kylie 26-09-2006 06:27 AM

Hmm I use spray lube so I don't actually get anywhere near my chain while doing it....... Well, no closer than about 10 cm anyway.

Taff 26-09-2006 06:32 AM

Ain't owned a bike with a chain for 15yrs, never will again, it's a mucky, oily, noisy, crap, idea.

cheaper to replace chains than drive belts... as I found to the detriment of my wallet last year... snapped the drive belt racing two sorts bikes!

Don't have the engine running. put it in neutral and turn the wheel by hand. or get a scottoiler

True but how many chains do you get through to every belt?
Ideal solution is shaft drive but belt is second and chain a poor third in my opinion.

Yeah my mate came and did it again for me this weekend as he pointed out that when doing it with it in gear half the lube comes straight back off the chain.

I consider my wrists slapped!
