Front Mudguard

I am about to book my chop in for its MOT... Do I need a front mud guard to get it through or are they used at my descretion ??

it depends on the tester as one local shop will refuse to mot a bike without a mudguard,whilst the one up the road has no problems if the mudguard isnt there
