sorry, but since sva came in, the words TRIKE and CHEAP are not allowed to be used in the same sentance. take a look in the classifieds, why do you think all the registered trikes are big money, and all the "all work done, just needs sva" ones are giveaway prices? "just needs sva" as a bit of a throwaway line in an ad isnt quite telling the truth, it should read "just needs someone with the patience of a saint to sort out this mess ive built myself, cos i didnt realise that registering a trike is about as big a beurocratic nightmare as exporting plutonium to iraq"!!! there arent any cheap trikes period!

But apart from that you could try Trick Trio Customs in South Wales, good work, and very good prices. 01685 845111 ;) Ask for Sean and tell him Pat at 100% Biker sent you.

the beurocratic nightmare of exporting plutonium to iraq, is no-where as tough as building a road legal trike is at the moment,, however,, as much as i hate to admit it,,, our government has held out,, and at least its easier than it is in many of our EU brther/sister states,, where TUV is king !!!! ,, BBB

Cheers TrikerBear I was beginning to get a paranoid complex there. Surely Aliks article on MSVA for a trike has shown we're not out to stop trikes.

i never for one minute thought that the dvla were out to stop people building trikes. in the past ive seen some truly horrific trikes that shouldnt have passed an mot test, let alona a propper inspection of their build quality. ive understood the new sva regs as a way of making sure that any trike registered since their introduction was absolutely spot on before it was released into the wild, and that can only be a good thing. it seems that some people still have the old mindset where they will put a huge effort into getting round the regs, but no effort at al into complying with them!!!

I agree with Johnr -
Seeing less and less of what I called "mobile bedsteads" - absolute deathtraps, on the road.
Machines slung together with no idea of even very basic engineering principles, no regard for personal saftey, let alone anyone elses.
I see the SVA rules as a box which sets a challenge to build to the extreme end of compliance.
for instance:-
my numberplate is EXACTLY the legal minimum in all dimensions - I am less likely to get an inconvenient tug and further investif=gation.
but,
if I do, then they have to get the tape measure out, it isn't a matter of opinion, it is a measurable fact by a trained Traffic officer that my bike complies EXACTLY to the extreme millimeter with the required legislation..
Very satisfying process when you have time to kill.

Ok guys not feelin paranoid any more but please don't lump us VOSA peeps in with DVLA. We're the (vaguely :D ) technical organisation while DVLA shuffle all the bits of paper.
Cheers

Does that mean you have a sidecar set up?
Why not build a car engined outfit.Would that still require a un-dvla tech bod with stix and tape measure??
Fancy a turbo deisel outfit/trike myself.60 mpg sound likes a good argument to me!!
Wonder if I'd have to jump through hoopes to get it on the road?P'haps 350 Jawa outfit could donate its headstock

well to let you in on a secret, my buring desire is to build an outfit with a front wheel drive car turbodiesel engine and gearbox, preferably auto, but having one driveshaft go to the rear to a diferential driving the rear wheel and sidecar wheel, and the other driveshaft going forwards to a bevel drive to drive the fromt wheel too, a 3 wheel drive outfit! but time is something i have little of for the present, though one day! at the mo ive a goldwing and watsonian oxford outfit, but im amassing the bits for a katana outfit with a watercooled gixxer engine, and a glider cockpit for a chair!!

to be honest, theres no bother with inspections for sidecar outfits, unlike trikes. the sidecar is regarded by the dvla as an accessory, like a topbox! so even if its welded on, you dont even need to change the registration details on the log book, i know, ive tried on more than one occasion, sending it off with the details of the new wheelplan, just returns a new log book with bycycle on it. just fit the chair to any bike you like, and get out and ride it, the dvla sva rules for trikes dont apply to outfits, only people you will need to inform are your insurance, and insurance companies regard outfits as a lower risk than solos, so your premium may well go down after fitting a chair.!
