Not sure if its been posted before but just had this reply to a query about trikes.....

Thank you for your e - mail dated 23 rd July 2004 regarding exemptions and discounts . All three wheeled vehicles, including Reliant Robins, auto - rickshaws and Motor - tricycles, have to pay the congestion charge although Motorcycles with side car do not have to pay the charge and do not need to register . I hope the information provided has gone some way to help you resolve your inquiry . If you have any questions, please contact us on 0845 900 1234 ( or Minicom number 020 7649 9123 ) or visit our website www . cclondon . com . Thank you for contacting Transport for London .

You're making the basic mistake of trying to apply logic to a government decision. It just doesn't work!

i sent them an email questioning the fact and he is the reply i got

"Dear Sir

Thank you for your recent inquiry regarding motortrikes.

The exemption for motorbikes, mopeds and bicycles is only applicable to vehicles with two wheels vehicles (including with sidecars). You can ride them anywhere in the zone at any time without paying the charge and do not have to register for this exemption.

Schemes that involve people making choices about using their vehicles may appear harsh in some circumstances although it is not congestion charging's aim to prejudice any group. Extensive public consultation was undertaken when deciding upon discounts and exemptions, with representations from many different groups in London before the scheme was decided on.

I appreciate your comments and, as Transport for London are continually monitoring and improving the scheme, these will be taken into consideration for any future changes that may be made.

Mad thing is that as far as traffic wardens are concerned then I count as a bike and can/should park in motorcycle bays!!!

the difference between a trike and a sidecar is, you can unbolt the cisdecar to make it a motorbike.

Some trikes can be converted back into a bike in only a few hours.

My biggest fear is that if too much is made of this, it could go the other way and before you know it we are all paying, no matter how many wheels we've got.

Its not something that i'm gonna follow up but just seems a bit unfair. Only likely to use the trike for work at weekends when you dont have to pay anyway.
