Was anyone travelling Southbound on the M1 near J18 yesterday (18/07/05) before 8 a.m.? Did you see a vehicle drop a bloody great length of 4x4 timber? If so can you provide any info about the vehicle?
I hit this timber around 8 a.m, bike went up in the air resulting in a bad fracture to my thumb (plaster cast up to the elbow for at least 4weeks), loads of bruises and the odd friction burn, and a very secondhand Bandit 1200. As the vehicle is so far unidentified I'm having to pursue a personal injury claim via the Motor Insurers Bureau, but I'm on my own for damage to the bike and about £900 worth of leathers and helmet (they're now knackered but saved me from what would have been horrific injuries if I'd been wearing anything less).
Any help that anyone can give would be appreciated, either by Personal message to me or to Pat the editor via the magazine.

have you got on to plod yet?

Most motorways have a lot of cameras for "traffic flow" which are ideal for this situation.

You'll have to do the legwork yourself though.

That was silly, imagine not looking out for a piece of timber on the road, I thought that was their natural habitat an' traditional spawning ground :p Seriously though, glad you're ok.

Come to think of it, considering the usual standard of driving in rush hour, you would be forgiven for thinking that planks normally breed on the road! :D

Hope folks don't mind, but I just thought I'd get this back up near the top in case anyone who didn't see it yesterday knows anything. Unlikely I know, but you gotta try :D

Just got back from the hospital. The thumb's still slightly displaced so they're going to put a pin in it within the next week. Good news is it'll be before the rock and blues so me and Mrs Shifty will still be going. She was going to take me pillion but if they put me in a sling I might not be able to get on the back of the bike. If anyone's going by car or trike and going near Chesterfield, any help would be massively appreciated.

i hate it when people drive round things on the road,i usually stop and try and chuck em on the verge. people are just too 'busy' these days

was with my cousin one evening just coming back from the pub, there was a big branch stickin in the road, just about head height for a biker  .

lucky my couz is a carpenter and had a saw in the boot,we cut it down, couldnt have lived with meself if someone would have hit it.

hope you find the prat who's vehicle it came from

Thanks mate; to be fair as it was in the 3rd lane it would have been dangerous for someone to stop and move it, but I'd love to know how long it was between it being reported to the Police and me coming along. You'd think they'd want to shift it pretty urgently.

Thanks Lynne; there's not much chance of anyone being able to help but you never know, we might nail the bastard yet. Oops! bit of an inappropriate wood/carpentry-related pun given that it was a plank of timber that started this in the first place!! :D

Just had a call from the hospital; seems I might get my operation on the thumb tomorrow. If not it will still be before the Rock & Blues so we'll still definitely be going. :D

Wahey!!!!!!!!! Hospital just called again to say I'm getting my op done on Monday. Apparently that's the day the hand specialist comes in.

Hmmm, "hand specialist".... Is it just me, or does that sound a bit rude? :D

This sounds so familiar!

When I had my accident in May and dislocated my shoulder, I was told surgery was required. Accident happened Tuesday night. On the Wednesday I was told the op would be on Thursday, on the Thursday they said Friday. On Friday they called, apologised and said "Definitely Monday. Shoulder specialist has been informed". On Monday they told me to come into hospital. Monday evening they told me the op would not be until Thursday at the earliest.

At this point I walked out. Went to see a private shoulder consultant on Tuesday and was informed that surgery was not necessary immediately and certainly not before trying physiotherapy.

Still, I did better than the bike which was a write off.

BTW, the driver who caused my accident drove off, so I also had to sustain all financial losses. The bike was only insured TPFT and I still owe £2K on it, and all the bike gear needed to be replaced.

But hey! **** happens! I might not have survived to tell you the tale. :D

Am off to hospital for my op in the morning. It's an afternoon surgery so they'll probably keep me in overnight, hope the food's not too crap (bet it is though).

Will catch up with you all later in the week.

Had the op on Thursday. Apparently it went well, 2 wires in me thumb as planned. Got out on Friday and went straight to the Rock N Blues on the back of Mrs Shifty's little bike - had a great time.
Just got a few boring weeks recovery now. Can't wait to get the plaster cast off and get back on my bike.
