You can download back-up copies of tracks that you already own with programs like kazaa lite and emule. Don't be downloading tracks that you don't own as that would be illegal.

I use a program called musicmatch jukebox, which works very well for me. I have over 150Gb of MP3 on my PC, enough to last me a lifetime!!!

try wavelab or if you got the latest version of nero, 'the nero wave editor' isnt bad, just record then convert

WinMX is good for downloading mp3s. Or try e-donkey.
Get WinAmp for playing them, and get the WinAmp Ripper add-in for converting your CDs. If you want to play around with your mp3s (like mixing/cutting/merging) then you want to get Audacity.
All are free. Just Google for 'em.

I'd argue for 192 if you've got the disk space.

disc space isnt a problem, just got musicmatch and it aint bad, as usual it dont work 100% with my PC but then whats new, i steer well clear of winmx now though as the last sont i downloaded had a charming virus attached to it which wiped my computer clean and then filled it full of child porn, NICE!!!

Fairy snuff, but that's not a WinMX issue as such, it happens across all P2P networks - it's a well known route for any wouldbe distributor of virii/pr0n/malware to stick it on a P2P network with a name matching something that loads of people are going to search for.
Do not connect your Windows PC to the internet without...
A decent firewall
A decent, regularly updated anti-virus product
A spam filter
An anti-spyware product.
Create a new user without administrative powers to be your default user (NT/2k/XP)
And there's more... (but we can save that for another time)

download kazaa, which is ad supported, then search for kazaa lite which has no ads, uninstall kazaa and install kazaa lite, download to your hearts content.
use wav2mp3 to convert to mp3 and mp32wav fot change mp3 to wav file, both are free downloads. if you want a copy of nero7 email me at
roywilson1@ntlworld.com
and I will gladly let you have a copy

also try soulseek
I paid for KaZaa Lite cos i got so pissed off with the normal KaZaA and I reckon it was worth every penny.
On a slightly separate tack have you noticed how many more corrupted music files are being put up. I read recently that the music companies are doing it deliberately to stop illegal downloads.
Burnt a CD the other day and found a quarter of the tracks were duds. That'll teach me to check first in future.
