Details as I know them so far.

This is the advert that the pub uses:
Wheel O'Worfield Bridgnorth Rd Worfield Bridgnorth
Tel: 01746 716208
The traditional, timbered interior and roaring fire is perfect for a
winter's night, but during the summer the pub comes alive with it's famous
weekly 'Bikers Night' held every Wednesday. Bikers from across Shropshire
and the West Midlands congregate in their hundreds to enjoy the pub's unique
atmosphere, while the hearty menu offers something to tempt every palate.

The pub has been host to a bike meet every Wednesday night for about 9
years. This has never been an event organised by the pub but the usual word
of mouth as biker friendly. The landlady & her son have tried to make the
night as safe as possible with signs, cones & marshals. For 5 years she has
been getting what she calls harassment from the police regarding Bike Night.

Yesterday afternoon she received a phone call from her local police
inspector saying that he hoped all her safety measures were in place.
Last night the police mounted an operation involving police cars, vans,
motorbikes, caught on camera vans & the police helicopter!!!
Bikers were 'pulled over' in groups & many received penalties for after
sales cans, tyres & the usual stuff.
The police then shut the pub!!
The landlady is to appear in court at 12pm today & has been told that she
will be asked to return to court on July 4th when they will be asking for
her license to be revoked.
I attach an email we received late last night from one incensed biker who
had received a £30 fine.
I have asked Shropshire police for their comments about this operation & am
still awaiting a reply. Contact Richard Ewels Shropshire Constabulary 01743
237491.
This appears to be disproportionate, heavy handed & an obscene waste of
police resources.
As the landlady said," This is discrimination."
As our magazine has already gone to print for this month please can you
follow up this story with as much weight as you can give it. It is totally
unfair that this lady can loose her livelihood just for being friendly to
Bikers.

Many thanks

Press Release by Police follows...

Bikers Venue Closed by Police on Safety Grounds
A Shropshire bikers’ venue was closed by police last night on public safety grounds after up to 1,500 motorcyclists turned up.

The meet is held at The Wheel pub in Worfield, near Bridgnorth every Wednesday night during the summer and in the past has caused concern among local residents and other road users.

It has been carefully monitoured by police to ensure road safety and to reduce disturbance to the local community. Police have also recommended safety improvements to the licensee of the pub.

But just after 9pm last night, Inspector Andy Thomas, the Bridgnorth section commander, served a closure order on licensee Gloria Goodson under Section 179A of the Licensing Act 1964.

Inspector Thomas said today he took the decision on safety grounds and to prevent possible disorder at the premises which might compromise public safety.

He estimated there were between 1,000 and 1,500 motorcyclists at the meet. “The event has grown beyond what is reasonably manageable.and the licensee has failed to implement the suggestions I recommended some time ago aimed at improving safety.

“The scale of the event has become totally inappropriate for the area. There was random parking of machines on the grass verges, pavements and any available space which was restricting the views of emerging traffic.”

He added that those attending had not caused any disorder and the decision was taken to protect public safety while also responding to the needs and concerns of the local community. “As things are, it is an accident waiting to happen.”

Inspector Thomas was appearing at Telford Magistrates Court today (at 12pm) to apply for the closure order to be continued until the next Transfer Sessions on July 4. He will present the full background and explain why it was necessary to serve the notice last night.

Used to go the wheel, brill place no hassle EVER! A right family evening out used to take my son with me!
Helpful marshalls on hand with parking, etc. Just Brill.
I remeber last season that there was something about a Tory Concilour or MP something (She) was out to get the meet stopped or the place closed even!

I bet theres been a load o' funny hand shaking going on over the winter months! I can't think of the name of that secret organisation? (You know the one that all the judges an' top cops are members of? 'em ? They help each other out when they get caught in them posh knocking shops, etc. Ho dam I give up! :( )

Fucking waste of time doing the police bike safe course, spend all weekend getting shown how to ride better than everyone else then you get told you shouldnt be on the fucking roads anyway when you meet up with other like minded people

and just to top it off, we got overtook last night on the way home from Nuneaton by a police bike being ridden by (im guessing) the mechanic, he left us for dead and we were doing 75

I use to go to the wheel at lot, mainly when it started
only went once last year and have not been this year
due to the amounts of police there, nuffin to hide they were just a pain in the arrsse
my brov in law went the other week and they were stoppin every one with £30 fines all round, but its funny that they never pull the little racer boys im thier GTis who drive round hoping to race a bike
and beliveme as its grown bigger over the years the land ladie has extended the car parking extensively with marshals gettin every one parked up safely

a lot of us used to go to the Royal Oak up the road as well

and there is hardly any community there, its out in the country ffs
plus the locals have never complained as far as i know
cuz the garage owner makes loads of money with everyone filling up/buying fags/ food and cuz the cue at the bars miles long ,drinks
and isn`t it also funny that all the other pubs along that road suddenly put `Bikers Welcome` signs out front

and the exclusive country club up the road also tried to poache bikers on the wednesday nights too

last time i went down there was `30` cops with radar guns and a police helicopter, yep we counted em, and there has never been any trouble
and i don`t think a accident has happened
and most folks go at 9pm

and i suppose when a little old lady got burgled in bridgenorth she was told there weren`t any plod avaliable as ther are understaffed

one word to say about the cops

Possible disorder? Would like to know if, over all those years, there had ever been any disorder on bike nites (probably not).

Ooops - just gonna move me kettle, in case there's an earthquake, could fall off and scald me if I happened to be passing.

Perhaps Private Eye might be interested in this one - especially if there's any possibility of ahem abuse of a position of power by elected representatives.
They covered a case where a publican was hounded out of business - mainly because a councillor kept pushing various regulatory bodies.

Slightly more soberly; I spent ages last night finding a Lincolnshire Bike Nite. When I got there I spent about 30 seconds looking around, then rode off for my own safety. Narrow road; single whites either side; just after a blind bend; lot of heavy goods traffic; people parked on verges, in driveways.
I've seen similar situations before; but without the added complication of heavy traffic. Sometimes we do need to act ourselves to prevent problems.
It's probably not usually a problem at the place I was at, but last night was such good weather it brought people out in droves.

The name of that councilor that I told you about is:-
Margaret Winkler is her name. She is councillor for Bridgnorth town on Bridgnorth D.C., but more imporantly, she sits on West Mercia Police Authority, which gives her a lot of clout with the Chief Constable. She is his boss.
Bikers in the West Mids are planning a ride down to the Wheel, on Wednesday night. They say that they will need to be a planed and welbehaved turn out! This needs to be advertised.

It's been posted on another site that there was some stone chucking by bikers at the coppers!

IF the bikers at the wheel start chucking stones, bottles, etc? Well, they are just playing into the hands of the powers that be! The wheel will be stopped!

Bikers need to take a leaf out of the Frenchies union book! Blockade, (to protest against the closure)

Slowride the whole town and the area on their busiesst day, disrupt the business/ money people and that'll make 'em think! Something like fifty or sixty bikes/trikes going continually around and around the traffic islands, stopping or at least restricting the flow of the towns traffic; work it so as three or four bikes leave (Going on to the next island) the island another three or four join in going around it! ,At each and everyone of the islands! ( quite a few traffic islands on the roads near the town, could block or at least slow down the whole road net work!) Or just slow ride in a large enough numbers, in and out of the town from all the main roads in an' out again. As long as it's peaceful they can't stop us, or can they?

I've been there a few times and although it does get a bit packed...all car parks full and petrol station used for some parking...the rest are on the road/verges....police have always been present or hiding in a layby to get you on your way home....good atmosphere there and generally peeps just go there to enjoy the company...

Another local pub in Shrops that seems to be getting a lot of stick from police and so say locals is the Stormy Petrel in Tern Hill nr market drayton....its in the middle of no where...maybe a few houses and a Army base...but thats it...however mr plod sits in his car or rides a plain bike....waiting to take yer money....

They never seem to bother with the boy racers who drive past and try to race any biker....who's willing....but never the car driver who gets it ....i often wonderif the boy racers are actually the police and are there to set bikers up....

I am as disgusted as the rest of you.....Abuse of power or what....

I was interested in his comment that the bikers noght was "An accident waiting to happen"

Since when have the police EVER taken preventative action...If someone threatens you and you complain to the police they say they can't DO anything until you have actually BEEN assaulted (or worse).....

I heard and interesting item on the news this morning.

Figures released yesterday show that Deaths and accidents involving police vehicles rose by 2/3 last year. This is police vehicles hitting other vehicles or running over pedestrians. Surley this means that a "blue light flashing" police vehicle is "An accident waiting to happen".
What pray is Inspector Andy Thomas of Bridgenorth going to do about that...

I think I might take some time today to write to him and ask him if he is going to pull all his vehicles off the road and resign....after all he is in control of those vehicles....If he can close a biker pub down to "prevent accidents" then he must also take action against his own liabliity.

Do you think he will agree? No wonder people are losing ANY respect that they used to have for police. They are supposed to UPHOLD the law, but they have become a law unto themselves.

Well it seems that plod in all its wisdom are up to this kinda trick all over the place. Devils Bridge is a biker meeting place up here in Cumbria (Kirby Lonsdale) on sundays the place is heaving with bikes (no pub just a van selling mugs of tea, coffee and bacon butties ect). over the last few months the police have been attending and doing the spotcheck on bikes thing, hassling folk for number plate size and loud pipes ect. They cant exactly shut it down cos its just a carpark but they are going out of their way to make it less popular (i got pulled 3 times on the way to devils bridge last time i went). Funny thing is i rarely if ever see any coppers about normally, they never seem to go after the tossers in their crap boxes with loud pipes either, bikes and their riders are being targeted (nothing new there then). To some extent the locals around kirby lonsdale are to blame as they are forever complaining about the bikes but the police must be spending a huge slice of their budget on a peacefull sunday afternoon bike meet instead of actually going out and catching proper crooks.

Great Idea that makes sense!

But I think they (Powers at be) would use the exspence against the bikers meetting at the Wheel!

By saying something like

"Yes it is a lot of public money being spent! But it is being spent on policing and controlling bikers! it's a difficult shout really because the police can enforce anything like this on a whim. Thanlks to the Tory anti Rave criminal justice bill. any event can be ceased on a supposition. where there is a potential hazard to the general populace the plod will get involved i.e affecting traffic, obscuring visability etc etc. 1500 people at a pub does sound alot. I'm not saying it's right but, you can see thir point of view.

The same applies to these boy racer meets they have in carparks. they get dispersed as sson as the plod find out about it.

thing is without prior permission and adequate space/facilities this sort of thing s bound to happen. I'm playing devils advocate here as I personally think the old bill should fook off and leave us alone.

Invasion of bikers shuts pub

Jun 24, 2005, 08:27

A popular pub near Wolverhampton has been closed by police - after it was swamped with over 1,500 bikers.

Plastic bottles and cans were thrown at officers after they swooped on The Wheel at Worfield just after 9pm Wednesday night following dozens of calls from worried residents.

Hundreds of customers were inside when officers took away the pub's licence from landlady Gloria Goodson amid fears for public safety. Police want to keep it closed until July 4.

Biker Stephen Vogan, from Wolverhampton, said he could not understand why officers had swiped the licence.

"Nobody was doing anything wrong at all. We know there has been trouble in the past but there were no wheelies being performed or anything.

"Everyone was having a nice time but when the police came a few people got a bit angry."

Inspector Andy Thomas, of Bridgnorth police, said he felt closing the pub - which has been holding the Wednesday night biker meetings for nine years - was the best course of action to make sure nobody was hurt.

He said: "The event has grown beyond what is reasonably manageable and the licensee has failed to implement the suggestions I recommended some time ago aimed at improving safety.

"There was random parking of machines on the grass verges, pavements and any available space which was restricting the views of emerging traffic."

He issued a notice banning the pub from trading for 24 hours and it will be closed until a further hearing at Telford Magistrates' Court today.

He said police were seeking an extension of the closure until July 4 because of concerns over the future safety of the meets.

"I attended the premises in response to calls by members of the public about public safety and I closed the pub under Section 179 of the Licensing Act," he added.

Bag Lady
24-06-2005, 02:53 PM
I have just read section 179 of the Licensing Act .....(yawn)

The excuse the police have used is based on a regulation that states that no more than 499 people can be on licensed premisis without a special license.

This "rule" must be broken every weekend in pubs all over the country, only biker pubs seem to bear the brunt tho'.

Why not pick on chav pubs - I am sure they cause more trouble anyway...

Trouble is if the police picked on them the police would be sworn at, stabbed, punched and abused, much easier to pick on a "soft" target of law abiding citizens.

okay everyone, 2 things

1. My mate works at the courts in Wolverhampton, he said that every judge (bar 1) are bikers there and are all pissed off with this load of bollox, so hopefully the landlady will get the biker judges on the case

2. instead of a biker nite down at the wheel, why not all turn up in cars, and stick to the speed limits bang on, no bugger can pull you for it, it will cause so much congestion to the locals that they will all complain, there aint no law about traffic jams now is there
