Wooosh lost me now :)
I knew what he meant lol
hey borg, we're getting a gs850 engine this weekend, it's a non-runner, and if it really is unfixable we might have a few bits n pieces on there you can have - probably won't know for a few weeks tho
so what's up with the alternator wiring? You could rewind it yourself, get the right size wire and add the correct number of turns (if you don't know how many turns, unwind the broken one and count how many you take off)
the trike isn't with me it's at a bloke whos doing it up for me. He aint got the time to re wind it and it's easier just to find a replacemnt and bolt it on.

Doro, it depends on which coil is gone, rewinding a field coil is easy, they are a normal coil on a steel or iron former and I have rewound several 550/4 ones in front of the tv in the past (0.72mm wire if anybodies interested, takes about an hour) but the genny coils are interleaved with the soft iron plates, its usually a machine job to get them rewound. The easiest way to check the turn count is to use a meter set to resistance and wind until the coil is full, then check the resistance compared to the manuals value.
thanks pete, though I've only wound inductors at work before, not easy when it's 3mm copper on a tiny core :(
especially when it's your first time and you get told to use some emery board to take the varnish off, then you procede to unwind the whole thing cos you thought all the varnish had to come off and not just the ends

one place I worked had a hand operated coil winding machine (lab sized) from about 1960, there were gears and worms and chains all over the thing, HSE would have loved it . It was a proper machine (did a nice job as well)
I likes dem der olde machines :D

If you're still running a Suzi reg/rectifier bin it and fit a Superdream one.My '79 GS550 is still on its original alternator with over 100000 miles up.The Suzi reg/rec is crap & the heatsink is too small letting it overheat and fail taking the stator with it.Also, keep your oil level up as this helps to cool the stator. BUT you probably know this already so I'll shut up now... :D
