View Full Version : Ok, what is a Biker?

Is there a dress code to be a proper biker? Is there a certain type of bike to be a biker? So on so forth. I'd like to know as i dont consider myself a biker, i consider myself as someone who likes motorbikes to the point of riding them all the time, got the scars, arthritis, weathered face, aches and pains to prove it but is this enough to be a proper biker or is there more?

Well this year me and Mitch are considering ditching the beards, leather waistcoats, rally badges etc and trying a new image.
We are going for the "Goth biker" look as featured in the film underworld.
Mutton dressed as lamb I hear you say? Yes! and loving it!!!! :p
Goths - coming to a rally near you - don't laugh ok, it's all part of the mid life crisis!

Having regularly read the Bikersweb I don't think you could ever be accused of that.

Controversial and outspoken sometimes but definately not tedious.

Between you and Suzukiron I'm sure things will bubble along quite nicely.

Got just the thing for you!

We use a product called shrinkwrap on boats. It's like placcy that we cut to shape and cover you in. Then blast you with a little hot air and it'll shrink into all your bits and pieces.

Problem is , if you leave it on too long , you'll get Osmosis and Gel blistering. I know , I know ... there's always a downside. :o

According to Suzukiron (the 4 wheel-drive rider) I'm not a biker either. I rode two/three wheels for 37 years until I was smashed off my bike by a BMW driver. I can no longer ride a bike or sidecar outfit, so I choose to ride a trike. This doesn't qualify me in some peeps eyes. Perhaps I should keep riding, though in intense pain until I die, or take a few other bikers out with me. We can't all die in the saddle, nor do we all want too. The time will come when some of the younger riders will reach old age (god willing) and then they will know.
If you feel like a biker and ride as much as possible, then you are a biker. Who cares what anybody else thinks. A lot of the critics that say they are the only real bikers are sometimes less of a biker than you are.
I've had my say, as far as I'm concerned, that's it. :p

A biker is someone who enjoys jumping on their machine and riding it! Be they an old grannie on their step-thru, a spottie oik on a scooter, a power ranger, a custom bike rider, or a classic bike duffer!

It's as simple as that.

Bikers show respect for other bikers they look after their own if one of their own they will help out as best they can. it is a state of mind as opposed to what you wear and how you look. ive been riding bikes for 22 yrs now and am proud to class myself as a biker. Although i dont have the usual long hair etc. just remember help others when they need it and look after your own.

I think thats a great philosophy, pity so many people dont follow that idea. The reason i asked this question is cause it seemed quite a lot of people were knocking power rangers as they call them. As far as im concerned theyre not the kind of people i would rely on cause they seem just as fickle as everyone theyre knocking. I find it comical and somewhat hypocritical that you have someone saying that they are a biker, live to ride, ride to live, freedom this, freedom that yet as soon as someone doesnt suit their blinkered little world they moan like the people they despise. I dont and never well do like double standards so before you knock all Power rangers, all righteous Bros, all dirt bike riders so on so forth just take a moment to reflect on the people you have been having a go at for tarrng you all with the same brush. Then rethink your stance cause it all seems a bit pathetic to be honest. We all ride motorbikes, we all suffer the same victimisation and last but not least a machine and the colour of your leathers does not dictate your character, if your a prick your a prick no matter what your attire and mode of tansport.

Well said. My lady friends son rides a gsx-r 750 (till he blew the engine up). he rode evryday in all weathers, loves to go fast and has been riding since he was thirteen. Just because he and his missus wear matching leathers etc it doesn't mean they are less bikers than me or you. I don't (or at least try not to) discriminate against any biker, until I find out out if he/she is a w*nker. Some peeps claim to be a biker, but are as false as Long John Silvers leg, those are the ones that I dislike.
Ride free and screw the rest of 'em.....

I think people get a bit confused........

What was I gonna say again.......oh yeah um thats it....People get confused between Someone who rides a bike and the stereotypical 'Biker' lifestyle of black leather and party rallies, brotherhoods etc.

Frankly I don't think anyone can answer this question because there is no definitive BIKER which can be used to measure against and as I believe that no-one owns the right to decide who is and isn't, we should just do our own thing.

I like bikes, I generally warm to others who ride and I'll happily help where I can....Am I a biker....naa I am Jay.

That last para sums it up for me. I don't consider myself a "biker", I'm just a bloke who loves to ride his bike (all year round) and meet people. Who ever and from where ever doesn't matter. You can be any where in the country and the rider on the bike coming towards you usually gives a polite nod or wave as he / she passes. That works for me.

:D My bikes aren't as buzzy and I'm not very young but the rest still applies...!

I'll nod or wave at other bikes - unless I see those f86king fluffy ears sticking on the helmet...
I'm a biker, I ride bikes, have ridden bikes for half my life now and - the important bit - will continue to until I can't. When I can't I'll get a trike or I'll be dead. People who aren't bikers but ride bikes, will ride until they find a new hobby.

For 'us' it's something we do, for 'them' it's something to do.

(personal) Definition: Biker - someone with a motorbike. So old fred on his c70 with his butties in the back = biker (if you get talking to these types of guys they usually had all sorts of interesting bikes in their past anyway), cool dude who used to have a spangly gold plated harley but now owns a volvo but with the jacket and attitude still etc Not biker.
I will add only that I dont really care what someone else uses as a label to describe me. Their mismatch, their problem. Please reciprocate.

Rabid
17-07-2004, 07:36 PM
Being a biker is not what you do it is a state of mind if you believe you are a biker then you are. Although you can also be a motorcyclist (if there is such a word). It doesnt matter what you do, it matters more what you believe. Do we all have tattoos, long hair and beards! No. Do we all ride Harleys, Choppers or streetfighters! No. Are we all aggresive thugs without a brain! No. then I rest my case it is a state of mind as opposed to a stereotype. I think that we are sometimes the worst sort of people fo stereotyping ourselves. :o

Yep, had a fizzy at 16, rode like a complete twat everywhere, and to some extent i still do :D I ride round on a big trailie now with a streetfighter project in my garage. Ive had everything from a Fizzy to a 1200 fettled Bandit. Got loads of scars, had loads of broken bones, even in my neck. And im basically still riding. What do i wear? Mostly designer stuff, posh aftershaves and basically im a right tart, i was a Skinhead for years (with motorbikes) ah the list goes on. I dont really conform to anything but i do love motorbikes, always have done and always well. As ive said before and others to, Im me, Im Rob who loves motorbikes. Am i biker? Dunno. Can i be arsed with being pidgeon holed? Doubt it. Well i keep riding motorbikes until i pop me clogs? Yeah. :D

i was just wondering that if someone like Jeremy clackson had sugested hacking noisy buzzy learners down with sharpened blades fixed to his car, then there would have been some VERY huffy letters written to MCN and 100%.
Just like the very learned gentleman said a few replies ago, we can be some of the worst at typecasting and pigionholing (forgive me if I mis-quote)
