Learned a lesson last night. The wife turned in really early so I decided to take ride. Due to an accident I had to detour through one of the "not so desirable" neighborhoods of Baltimore. Now I'm not sure if you experience this in your city, but here, the majority of residents will step off the curb and then get as close to moving traffic as possible while crossing the street. They are very brazen about it as well. Staring you, the driver, right in the eye. I've actually parked my 4wd cage and have found finger drag marks down the side of it. I'm not really sure what this is, as a driver, it's seems to me like they are daring you to hit them so they can sue and collect. Who knows. It's also think it has to do with inner "I'm a bad a$$" city mentality. Either way, its infuriating because as you move away from them, they step in to close the gap between them and your vehicle. I've come up with my own term for these folks, I call them chickenheads as in, why did the chicken cross the road. In my cage, I've learned to hold a straight line, and just cover the brake with my foot. I know, your probably shaking your head, but I've actually tried moving away going so far as to cross the line into oncomming traffic but the aholes just keep comming. So last night on my scoot I encountered this chickenhead who was standing in the right track of my lane. I moved to the center lane, and he moved to the center lane. I had cars behind me and so in order to get by this chickenhead I had to wait until I was right on him and then did a quick countersteer and swerved to the left lane track. Even then he was still close enough to reach out and grab me if he had wanted to. As I got by him I muttered "WTF" more to myself than as a verbal attack but as I continued I heard the chickenhead yell something back. I thought to myself, "he heard me through my full face helmet?" 1/2 a block up I stopped at the light and glanced over my right shoulder past the cars behind me to see if chickenhead was comming towards me. The coast seemed clear and I sat and waited for the light to change. The next thing I heard was a loud pop and in focus of my headlight the glitter of flaking chrome. Well I didn't wait around to find out what was comming next, I saw no oncomming traffic, dumped the clutch, made a illegal right on red and tore out of there. I stopped about 3 miles up the road to collect myself and look at my bike. At this point, I'm guessing chickenhead lobbed a rock at me but hit my bike instead so now i have a nice scratch and a bb sized flake of chrome missing on my head light assembly. While it really angers me that my brand new bike is now damaged, I am greatfull that it was what it was. A 9mm would have done alot more damage so this lesson didn't cost very much.

Lessons Learned:

1. People can hear you through your helmet so be carefull. Venting as you may do in your cage will have less than desirable effects in close quarter driving.

2. Watch for chickenheads. Stopping and letting them cross may be a better solution in some situations when there is no traffic climbing up your rear. Otherwise, the only thing I can think of is to psyche them out, hold your lane position till the last moment then swerve. Anyone else got any better ideas?

3. Keep in mind where your riding at all times. In this same neighborhood I've had eggs thrown at my car as well some pot shots with paintball guns. While I've never been hit with a paintball, I imagine catching one in the back or in the face while on your bike would be enough of a jolt to bring you and your scoot down. As I ponder the events of last night I think it's important to keep these threats in mind anywhere. While thugs and chickenheads may exist downtown, in bmw suburbia, spoiled teenage brats run the streets with the same paintball guns.

4. I have my reasons for not carrying a gun while I ride and really I have no desire to debate this with anyone, please respect that. But had chickenhead decided to make more of this, what would I have done? Perhaps it's time to consider a can of pepper spray on the bike? Has anyone else given this serious thought?
