View Full Version : Two very silly trike ideas...

since there seems to be quite a few trikers on here, i thought id post up some ideas ive been mulling over..

idea 1)

trike a bus.. Why not? then the whole club can go to the rally in the dry, in style, masses of luggage spage, and only one person needs to be sober to drive back. I'm thinking more along the lines of a city hopper type bus rather than a double decker, as these often have the engine in the boot.

big JCB rams as forks (connect the in and out hydraulic lines together to get damping, and car coil springs around the outside to get springyness..

Can I do this (in theory) and ride it on a bike licence (assuming the bus is under 3050 kgs or summat.

Idea 2)
trike a bike - but in a different way. iirc the law states that a trike is a three wheeled motorcycle with the plan of the wheels to be 'even' or equidistant about the centre line. so.... what stops you putting a small (moped / model aircraft) wheel on the centre stand and callign that your second swingarm and third wheel. hey presto, no helmet required.
then - this is the dodgy bit (LOL) - you have all seen trucks driving about with a wheel jacked up - i asked about this (to the dvla) and they said that the vehicle is classed by the number of wheels that CAN be on the ground - so even though the truck is a 6 wheeler (or whatever) its classed as a 8 wheeler (or whatever) - so.... therefore can you jack up the centre stand (or just let that handy spring do it for you) and still be classed as a trike?

then the really dodgy bit comes in (oh god...)

if a truck has a puncture.... and the wheel is taken off, and that axle jacked up - its still a truck isnt it? would it be illegal to take a wheel off and drive down the road? i dont think so. so

neee nar nee nar....
cop - hello sonny, why you not wearing a lid?
me - well - its a trike officer
cop - no its not - it has two wheels
me - yes, but heres the V5 stating its a trike, and theres the mounting for the third wheel
cop - but it doesnt have a wheel..
me - yes it does, its just down at kwik-fit being mended at the moment....

ooh - ive just spotted aniotehr thing

curtosy of http://www.geocities.com/bikes_n_trikes/TrikeLaw.html :)

"4. Protective Headgear.

B26.04

(1) Save as provided in paragraph (2) every person driving or riding (Otherwise than in a sidecar) on a motor bicycle when on a road shall wear protective headgear.

(2) Nothing in paragraph (1) shall apply to any person driving or riding on a motor bicycle if -

a. it is a mowing machine.
b. it is for the time being propelled by a person on foot.

so - can i attach a small grass cutter to the bike and call it a mowing machine? then i dont need to wear a lid?

I think I can remember years back a "Sidewinder" which was a third wheel stuck on the side of a bike which then clasified it as a "sidecar outfit"....might be wrong, but i'm sure some of the other old gits here will remember it too....

You is sooo right! The sidewinder was/is basically a platform with a wheel on it that was/is hinged at the mounting point so that it leaned with the direction in which the bike was turning. My mate had one, so that he could get round the new 125 law when it came in at the time. Great fun watching him wizz down he road with this thing flapping up and down everytime he hit a pot hole, as it had no damper on it to keep the wheel on the ground! Also bloody scary if you were a pillion as it would trap and crush your left foot when you went hairing round a left hander! Ouch!

Yep, I'm an' Old Git as well!

yes - but a sidewinder makes it a sidecar outfit - and a trike is different in that the law states that it has to be symetrical about the centreline..

having one wheel stuck out on one side isnt symetrical
(unless, as per the drunken conversation last night, you had TWO sidecars.....)

<tantrum>

shut up about bloody sidewinders

</t>

sidewinders are legal sidecars - sidecars are different to trikes cos they are not 'symetrical'...

Oi blackhack less of the 'old' - tho I do admit to being somewhat of a git at times - yes I do remember them 'Sidewinder' things, and like PW, I remember folks with bits of rope to pull em up once away from the likelyhood of meeting up with any plod.

The trikin' a bus idea I think is great - if nuthin' else it gave me a giggle.

Have a good day folks. An' if you're off to a rally this weekend - hope the weather is good for ya.
