View Full Version : 91 mph up hill on a Harley!!!

I don't think so officer.

I have been accused of travelling at 91 mph on my Softail up a hill on an A road (automatic ban!). Well I don't know about you guys but I find it difficult to believe.

Anyone have any explanations?

The bike is stock except for a Stage 1. I had just overtaken three cars travelling at about 50 mph with two other Harley following I did not change gear (5th) and the hill had a "crawler" lane). I managed to stop within 495 ft (the overall stopping distance at 91 mph) withoiut causing any other traffic to slow or deviate from its course. The hill is about 1:6 The other two Harleys were not discussed or apprehended and are prepared to testify that they were not doing 90 mph either.

There is a massive TV transmitter within 1500 m of the location from which the officer used the speed detector (a hand held device). Directly over the location are High Tension electricity cables which emit an audible buzz 24_7 (interference?). The detector was fired at an angle of approximately 15 degree within 15 feet of a police car (presumably with a radio fitted and on[more interference?]) with a distance of approximately 150 feet to the target (moi!). 91 kph incidentally is about 60 mph. Do these things read in kph as well as mph?

Any ideas for a defence?

When the court finds out you ride a Harley they'll throw the speeding case out, no case to answer.... LOLOLOL :D

Did they show you the speed read out? it is my belief (but i could be wrong) that if you are stopped, then they have to show you the readout, failing that are you in the RAC? cos they will give advise and defend you in court if you are in the right, also check out page 33 in this issue of 100%. Sorry can't be more help. :(

All I can say is get some proper legal advice check with your insurer or your recovery people ( you must have recovery? you ride a Harley)
As for the speed yep its possible, my softails only mildy tricked up and will easy pull that up a hill, dont forget its got a lot of torque the good old V twin.

I got done on a camera in my car last August, I asked for photo proof, which they sent, I sent all the paperwork back, still havent heard anything, The moral they are nicking so many people at the moment I believe their just going for the easy ones who dont contest etc, drag it out for as long as you can, good luck.
Oh yeak while Im at it a Harleys just a motorcycle like all the others on the road, ok its got its fair share of hells accountants, but as for the negative comments ok I take a joke, but were not all W**kers as chop rocker seems to think.

I think mine did about 70 once. It was on the back of a Green Flag trailer. :p

I believe the hand held devices are very inaccurate and any movement of the officers hand alters the reading. Coppers in California recorded palm trees (swaying in the wind) as speeding at 60+mph.
Try AA or RAC legal service, if you're a member. By the way a Harley will go up hill at 90+. I followed a low-rider over the mountains from Santander in Spain and I was losing out to him at 90mph.
Good luck!!! :(

Ooh I hate them hairdryer radar thingies!

In agreement with pretty well what everyone has said, you seem to have a pretty good argument to back up your contesting the reading. I got stung back in winter by a nasty little sh*t with a handheld radar who was hiding just off the transition between a 30 and 60 zone: He was zapping everyone as they accelerated over the last 10-15m of road. Fair play, cos I was speeding, but although I took the points, I got a lot of hindsight thrown at me by other people, some of which may be rooted in truth:

1. You can ask to see the evidence (usually photographic or video) prior to agreeing to taking a fixed penalty or going to court. I've heard anecdotes where the plod have tried to do folk and the photograph has turned out being of a totally different bike.

2. Apparently those hand-held units are known for their "flexible" accuracy, and as such need to be re-calibrated on a regular basis. Again, third hand, I've heard that a valid calibration certificate is required for the charges to stand up in law. I'm not sure if the claibration check is on a daily basis or otherwise, but I'd certainly want to see it if I'd been clocked at over 90 on a Harley (hell, I'd want to frame it! :p )

Good luck anyway, because it looks like they've gone wrong somewhere.

the speed should be easily achievable by a harley... my speedo only goes to 120mph so I can only say my speedo needle bounces about a bit after that... 90 is little more than idle... ;)

91mph on a Harley?

I'd have that framed as proof that it went that fast without shaking to bits or cutting out!

I've got now't against 'em , but I don't agree with a lot of the "attitude",if you get my drift ?

For example here in France , if you don't ride a chrome bedecked milwauke twin your not a "biker".!!!
I put in more miles in a month than the majority o'the wa****s do in a year!!

If it ain't Harley it ain't **** !
Does this really mean what it says'cos if it does , why would anybody want one ?

I just don't understand the logic , I allways thought being abiker was about being different , so why are we all supposed to be the same to become one ?

I've also found that since it has become the mode to ride a "HOG" they have become even less atractive to people like myself.Hogh prices, for what to have the same bike as yer local doctor/cop/soliciter/etc...

I'll stick with me cheap sh**e and keep ridin', at least I don't need to worry about bank loans etc...

I'm not 'avin' a dig it's just the way I see things, and that is what makes the difference, right?

Ride long ,hard an' free (even if it is on a 2 ton barge wit' crap brakes an' sh**e electrics !! LOL)

:D

well by the same token should we then not ride any japanese bikes because so many wankers ride jap sports bikes?

Of course lots of rich tossers ride Harleys but come on lets face it they're pretty much standard bikes with 3 ton of chrome and conchos *shudder* chucked on it... to those people it's a status symbol but you shouldn't let that put you off, knobs ride all sorts of bikes. I'm not a Harley snob and I don't like that type of character I like modified bikes irrelevant of what make they are and don't make snide comments about 'rice burners' etc, but I've had a soft spot for Harleys for a long time, they're great mate and if you had a long ride on a big twin you would love it also (trust me they grow on you once you get a good ride on one)

anyhow my bike brakes fine and the electrics have been ok so far... now the quality of chrome is a different matter, very very poor

They're all tossers !!.
I'm gettin' me pogo stick from the cupboard !
No, seriously (did I really say THAT !).
Been there ,seen it ,done it, used to ride an FLH and an XL.
I just prefer cheap ratty shi*e,it's where I feel best,no bones man !

So there's no beef, know what you mean but, even with the "friends" I have over here the permanent question is ,why don't you get a Harley?
To what end can we not be happy without one ? I am but maybe I'm just a bit wierd?

All that aside,I'd best get on wit' some work !!
Have a nice day !!!!!!

Usually the folk that ain't got one though and like I give a sh1t.

I know I've said it before but for the sake of those that haven't heard it I've ridden my Heritage 40,000 miles in the last two years and the only problem I've had is worn out footboards and a broken battery cable. I've ridden most bikes in the last 30 years (including a Harley Cagiva 250 which put me off Harleys for about 28 years) I now have a 1450 Heritage and would not swap it for anything else. And before you start, notwithstanding the reason for this thread, I rarely get passed by other bikes unless it's a long straight and even then it doesn't take long to catch up on the twisties.

The bike looks great, it feels great and it sounds great. In this world of politically correct sameness it makes a change to have something that actually works yet is still different from the herd.

If I need to explain anymore you really wouldn't understand.

Ride safe, just don't die of boredom!

Much as I covet a night train - when someone says Harley I have a vivid picture in my mind of my m8 Hugo who insists on riding his glide wearing nothing but shorts and sandals (no socks) with his missus on the back in shorts, bikini top and thong sandals - they are both in their fifties. Everytime he goes round a corner the foot plate scrapes the ground leaving a half mile line of sparks and fire. :) tell me Scottie, is this mandatory?

I don't think anyone here is actually "Anti-Harley", we just like taking the p*ss out people who ride 'em! If truth be known, it's probably a combination of jelousy (what ffs is the correct spelling of that word?) of not owning/can't afford to own one. Or, Those having owned a pup of a harley, slating them.

Personally I'd like to have a Fatboy or a Roadking, or an 1974-6 Electraglide, or a WLA/WLD. possibly even a V-Rod, but seeing I haven't got the dosh to even contemplate getting any of them, I'll resort to taking the p*ss out of those that have got'em! Coz I'm quite jelous! (It's that bloody word again!).

TaxiDave

I've had all sorts of bikes good and crap. I will have a Harley cos I've always wanted one, probably next year when finances allow. Until then it is my god given right to take the piss out of Harley riders. :D :D But I'm not jealous at all. No honest. Bastards!!
