At a rally a couple of weeks ago, a few of us were bemoaning the demise of real trad rallies, you know , old fashioned ones with no entertainment, just a quite remote site, a few bales of straw to sit on (maybe a small marquee to sit in if its very wet/cold, no bands/discos/food wagons/stalls etc just bring your own beer & bbq and sit round the bonfire drinking and getting to know your fellow bikers.... opinions please.

u gotta have some kinda music, even if its a radio ,,or someone wiv a guitar or summat
yeah, I used to go to rallies like that, tho we did have music and a small beer tent, had silly games during the day, a roaring bonfire at night, a small disco playing music, and a bar in a tent, but everyone still sat outside drinking and talking.
that was in the early 80's so dunno which era pat is on about

Sorted, i believe your sorting the band out ? ;) I'll be backing vocals if ya like, cos of me swollen glands and all that, but get me pished and I might be the entertainment, or the not so entertainment in most cases, hehehehe

I have a problem with swollen glans too -- but less about that.
Years ago , used to do Kendal Mintcake Rally - that was a trad one I think.
Intentions were always good , but we all used to end up riding up the road into Kendal and taking over the Kent Tavern for the evening and ending up at the local homes for wayward young ladies. Happened every bloody time , but at least we turned up for our rally badges.!

bout 25 to 30 years ago we used to go to rallys in the middle of no where, you took lots of beer and 'stuff' and made your own entertainment, they were generally small affairs but tremedous fun. as long as the camp site fee was paid not much emphasis was put onto money (we was all skint then), some of the better organised ones was in staggering distance of a pub which we would take over on saturday night and then drink afore mentioned pub dry of newky brown.
the rallys these days seem to be about making as much money for the organisers and for the peeps who go its like 'I'm here, I'm pished...I've paid my money....entertain me...
thats why I only go to the smaller ones.

not sure about 30 years ago , I was only 2yrs old, but I do prefer the smaller rallies myself, you get to meet more people for some unknown reason and they are just plain and simple fun fun fun :D

Going back 20 years or so:
I used to phone up a pub in the middle of nowhere and pretend we were the local " Classic Biker" appreciation society / whatever.
Tell them we were looking for a "venue" for a little ride out and annual "enthusiasts" get together. When they okayed this , we then invited everybody we could and headed up to take the pub over. There were some bloody great , cheap , fun do's , but we never really got invited back a second time. Shame really ,I think it was the team of prostitutes that turned up one evening that did it. Or maybe it was Keith fighting with the owners alsations after he set them on us ( Thanks Station Inn - Ribblehead viaduct!).
The owner got p**sed off cos Keith won!
Ahh , the good old days!

EEEK!
Seriously though, isn't it to some extent indicative of modern society?
Before it used to be "let's all meet up and have a laugh, what happens happens".
Now it's "I want everything on a plate".
Just my two bob's worth.

lot to be said for smaller disorganised meets .you have to talk to other bikers to enjoy the event . at the bigger meats I get the felling that we are all being treated like cattle. There are lots of examples but lets take stormin last year.A MAG event ,good do bit cold but it was september . But mag have had a few none payers , so you cant go anywhere on the site with out your wrist band . they would not even let you leave with out showing it. Now this event had every thing beer/band tent x2 funfair stalls chip shop good camping field toilets etc.But I felt that I was a body that had to arive spend lots and then go.bit like sheep to the slaughter.I camped in a field with 2,000 other bikers ,all of them wraped up in there mini meets. where in a small meet every body pitches in and has a lot of fun. The best bit of stormin for me last year was the ride to and from. the event for me has got far to big and i wont go this year. Dont want to single stormin out ,all big meets are just to big for me now.rock and blues, bull dog .all to pricey and the wrong people are going for the wrong reasons.
biggest 1 ive ever done is fyp as i much prefer the smaller 1s so much more friendly and more fun as you tend to meet more poeple and then get reaquainted as at the other small 1s throughout the yr :D

i used to go to one in the scot borders every year small pub no music just silly games and alcohol that was about 15 year ago some have just got to commercial rock and blues for one i stopped going when radio one started offering tickets out as phone in prizes.
like me wife sez smaller ones can still keep you happy for the weekend :D
Rabid
24-06-2004, 03:25 PM
Small is more friendly. Lets not bother booking music then were not shocked when it doesnt turn up, bring your own booze then you dont get ripped off. Feed yourself then no need to worry about veggies or curry freaks etc. I think you could have a brill weekend for less than £20 plus petrol lets do it.

we used to go to the black swan(aka)mucky duck a few years back, used to let us camp behind the pub,and even supplied the bonfire.no music as such, but we sorted out our own entertainment.great laff.also used to go to a campsite in the new forest, middle off nowhere, also fun.lets organise one,see how many takers,we're up for it.

planning one, it was just a natter I was having with Creature at a rally the other weekend, but he did express an interest in doing one, but didnt think folk would want it with just about nowt organised, just turn up, with beer bonfire etc
Maybe he'll think differently and give it a go after this response...

problem may be finding a venue,or if you know a friendly land owner,or publican,etc....that would mak it easier.but a splendid idea nonetheless.....

We have been thinking along these lines ourselves.
A back to basics no-frills gathering, minmal cost, minimal organisation.
When I were a young desparado on me Triumph we used to go to events held in the woods near Tunbridge Wells.
There was no music, just 2 bath tubs - one full of ice/water to cool yer beers (Jackpot Party 7s) and the other had a fire underneath it warming some kind of stew which you just ladeled out into yer enamelled mug.

i know exactly what you mean, say to people lets go off for weekend, find a venue, wake up next morning with blinding hangover only to find umpteen people asking "what will we do now?" Sheep huh....

most rallies shouldn`t have some of these bands, most are crap
trad rallies, ace, blokes, bikes, beer mmmmmm
the good old days
remember just taking a doss bag and sleeping under the stars?
now its all tents n air beds
but i`d die with out me air bed nowadays
but i hate most of these bands at rallies these days
the last rally i did i thought was total crap (wont sat which) but the name said it all.
tape deck playing away in the back ground is fine by me, i`d rather get pissed and talk bollox with folk at rallies than watch a crap band (and i knoe i played in crap bands for years)
and bod pleases stop posting pics of yerself, you don`t look much better in pics than real life ( hows the trike now?)
and the moonshiners rally is great trad rally too (no band no DJ)

Well lets sort one then. Cheap nite & a damn good en. We got a huge tent & cud all sit inside if it rains. F**** it why not. When are folk free. And where can we get a venue more to the point?

Reminds me of camping in the woods above the quarry with me mates. Ride up there, plenty of beer, used to take the tents but after a beer an a few spliffs could never be arsed to put them up.
Sitting around the fire getting steadily sh1t-faced and talking bollox - fantastic!

there is one near me around nov time - but most trad rallys these days seem to be invite only, so most people dont get t o here about them.
am still considering the idea - i have a site and marquee available. just not sure wether to have music on sat nite (disco or not)
the one problem I have found (so far) is lack of venues were you can have a large fire...

i like all types and sizes of rallies. ive been lucky enough to get invited to start me year with a mates club .....park up and walk a mile or two carryin ya stuff to a ramshackle barn in the middle of nowhere. no electric, old reaburn stove and gas bottle cooker , bunks in the loft, one room sleeps 25 ish, outside wooden loo in a shed, hosepipe with showerhead fitted, and a campfire. about as basic as you get and fkin ace. then i like the small rallies with a couple hundred friends, maybe a band, always a fire. then slightly larger rallies of up to 2000, then if i want music choice, food choice, shops, funfairs, shows etc i have FYP or Stormin'. only ones i never do are the huge rock n blues/bulldog size events.

I've just spent a weekend with 15 assorted bikers in a barn in the middle of the marshes in Norfolk. Music on a CD, chicken on the barbie, beer by the bucketful - and the entertainment was mostly calle dMichael (there's always one!)
Best weekend I've had for yonks!
