No, not an embarrassing personal problem -not one I'm owning up to anyway.
Spent 4 hours this afternoon, stripping half my Speed Triple apart, trying to trace an intermittant starting problem. Every third or fourth attempt I'd press the button & just get a click from somewhere under the saddle. With the help of a mate we stripped off the rear bodywork, pulled out the relays, the battery, the starter solenoid -all to no avail. Until my mate checked the wiring diagram & realised the starter circuit runs through the clutch cut-out switch. Can't start the motor until the clutch lever's pulled in. Checked the tuppeny ha'penny switch on the bars. Corroded from riding through the winter. Cleaned it with a bit of Scotchbrite pad. Fires up every time now! Bloody modern bikes. If it had left me stranded on the side of the road somewhere I wouldn't have had a clue where to start looking for the fault.
Next problem; The speedo's packed up & I want to replace it with a chrome mini one. I've seen them at shows with a trip meter & a row of tiny warning lights at the bottom of the gauge. Anyone know if these will be the right ratio for my Trumpet? Two small chrome clocks would look a heck of a lot prettier than the standard big plastic boxful of gauges.

Now you tell me! Where were you when I was ripping me bike apart?!
No, mine's a 2000 955i in lovely, lovely green. Would show you but can't post piccies on this forum for some reason. Go to the link below & click on Forums, Gallery. Have been seriously thinking of selling it cos I need the money at the moment. Rebuilding my trike & once that's finished the Trumpet won't get a lot of use. One of the reasons I need to replace the speedo. Can't really flog it without one! Yours for 3 & a half grand.
Gonna take a ride out to Boxhill near Dorking tomorrow for the Sunday morning bike meet. Haven't had a good blast on it for ages.
Is that what's known as blowing your own Trumpet? :)

9 times out of 10 starting problems are safety switches, clutch, side stand,
and some times the starter switch its self, always clean the contacts regular
mainly when you`ve been riding through crap weather
kill switches are buggers as well, i never use em!
plus i`ve found out from the last time the chop wouldn`t start is check the ignition key is turned to the on position before ripping the wiring out,
bloody sunday mornings at rallys eh

It's the earth side of the solenoid that runs through that switch.
To stop it ever happening again , I simply ran the earth straight off solenoid and onto battery.

Yeah, I was very tempted to just chuck the switch away & loop across between the two wires that run to it, but as I said, I'm reluctantly thinking of selling it, so didn't want to start pulling too many bits off it. Only had 16 thou' on the clock, (till it packed up), & I think I'm the first owner to ride it in the crap weather. First modern bike I've had. Never owned anything newer than about 15 years old before. Unbelievably quick. Was on the motorway a while back, doing about 50. Turned to look behind me to overtake, leant on the throttle as I turned. By the time I turned back I was doing over a ton! EEK! It's known as Kermit the Thug, cos it's big & green & scarey.
On the subject of crowd/rider cock-up scenarios:
My personal best was probably at the old Magna Carta rally a few years ago. In Upminster High Street, Saturday afternoon. Fire the bike up, short pipes sounding gorgeous. Big handful of throttle, expecting to blast off down the street. Front wheel did half a revolution before the disc lock slammed against the back of the fork leg, catapaulting me straight over the handlebars.
How do you look cool trying to recover from that?!
Collecting the Best Trike trophy at last summer's Northhants NCC show. Pub carpark. 300 NCC guys. Announcement made. I ride up to the stage. Radiator decides to dump it's entire contents onto the tarmac. Have to sit there while the photos are taken with large puddle of steaming liquid forming under the Reliant! Wasn't stage fright. The head gasket had blown in the heat while I was queueing up waiting my turn, & pressurised the water system.
Bugger, bugger, bugger.
Dodgy alarm/imobiliser troubles:

I've got a Trophy 900 and had the same problem with that clutch switch, took me 'kin ages to find the problem then about 10 minutes to fix.I'll probably be modifying the bike later this year and that wiring is gonna be made a whole lot simpler.
I too would like to know about fitting some smaller neater clocks if anyone knows of some good ones that'll work.

Ok i have a problem can any of you help?

Today after charging my battery up i took my bike out after a 2 month break...(hernia)
Its only firing on 1 and 3 and i can only assume its the spark plugs coked up so tomorrow i will set to work with a plug wrench and glass paper.
However i have this naggin suspicion its my carbs.

Does this sound about right or am i pissin in the dark during a force 9 gale?

Oh and the tanks full.. :D

First port of call new plugs and drain carb float bowls (using screw at bottom yah?)
If still acting up - cheque it's sparking on number 2. If not , likely to be a coil , cos they all fire offa a single trigger coil. These trigger coils are common to go duff , but you'd lose all sparks.

Anymore than that - do a search for Triumphant motorcycles -he's very knowledgeable , very helpfull and has stacks of secondhand parts.

Or it could just be your petrol has gone off. It can happen you know. Drain half out and replenish with fresh petrol. this will refresh the stale petrol and everything will be luvverly again.

Or I could just be talking bollox to wind up Farty Trousers.......

Nahh i wouldn't do that to him......much. :D

If you did'nt i would be worried...lol

I did that this morning...the symptons where that it felt low on fuel i managed to get 18 quid in.
that sounds like a lot but it was the super stuff cos i find that it helps starting in the cold.
But i did a blast to Cov and back to clear out the furry creatures the may have take dwelling in my zorst pipes...lol

but as soon as i drop the revs to below 4 thou it goes crap again. :(

Plugs and carbs tomorrow i think then.

Sometimes (despite all the clever stuff they put in petrol these days) you can get varnish like deposits in the fuel system while the bike has been standing.
Easier than stripping the thing is to get an aerosol can of carb cleaner and spray that through... Remarkable stuff but not very cheap.
If it aint that then you might have an air leak from a cracked hose/connector etc on the inlet side.
