Right might sound a bit thick however....

I have a chop (part started) 1981 xv1000 engine when the throttle turns the carbs dont open.
if pics will help i can upload them (if i can work it out)

Are they vacuum carbs if so they only open with motor running
If they not summits fucked

If the engine runs only on choke and does not show reaction on throttle twist,
the vacuum rubbers ontop of the sliders have holes or cuts. There are slider/rubber combos available from aftermarket companies, but it will be cheaper to buy a used carb off an XV 750, 920 or TR1 (1981-1984). They all have the same carbs.
Or you invest 600$ in a KJS single-carb system. Contains new Mikuni carb, filter and manifold. The bike runs on idle like a Harley, carb is easier to tune on different exhaust systems.
