Hi, Monty here - OK, so somebody else already has that name on this forum, so I used Montyzooma instead (first bit of my email address), but I've always been called "Monty" since I was ... um ... dunno, 3? Don't remember anything else anyway!

Dunno if any of my existing mates are on here, but I just stumbled on it, like the mag so thought I'd sign up, see what I find ...

It would be fun to find if any "long lost" acquaintances are on here, so a bit more i.d. detail: I went to KHS, then I went to RATS, I'm now an engineer in the Nuclear Industry; I used to be in a band called Atakarma, always been into bikes, Harleys in particular, used to be in Northern Harley Club now in Rainy City HDC, Manchester ... uh, enough - if any of that rings a bell, drop me a line eh?

Aye welcome do ye not think you should get a bike with more history i.e. Triumph after all they been on the go a bit longer as well being British.


Oh aye and if John says he is visiting yer local area buy a set of water wings and prepare for floods.


And if am visiting Bolton way make sure ye lock up and hide yer tools as I can easily destroy any engine by just looking at a spanner.

Uh, that's weird - the screen that I typed my details into wouldn't let me have Monty as a username, said "That username is already in use." Huh, bloody technology ...



@kidhaf - I did wonder whether to bite, but OK here ya go:
I used to ride PROPER Triumphs (Meriden-built twins) before I switched to Harleys, which I did partly because Triumph had just gone bust so I couldn't expect future support from the factory, and there was the potential for after-market support to dwindle (although it's pretty good so far ...).
As for having 'history', the new Hinkley-based Triumph isn't the same company at all (the logo was changed slightly for that exact reason), John Bloor just bought the name and used it to 'brand' his new bikes - nice bikes, yea, but if you want to quote "long history" then either you have 1897 (being generous, as motorbikes didn't come 'till 1902) to 1983-ish for the old Triumphs from Meriden (86 yrs max.) or 1988-present (26 yrs so far) for the new Triumphs from Hinkley, but you can't really have both ...
Harley Davidson: continuous production of motorcycles since 1903 to 2014 and counting ... just a shame they're not a British company, although their founders were all immigrants from Britain (of course!). Having said all that, I wouldn't really want a Twin-Cam, for me the peak was Evo - the TC is an entirely new motor with some serious design compromises for the sake of making production less labour-intensive and so more competitive with Jap stuff.
BTW, I believe Royal Enfield is actually the oldest continuous producer of motorcycles in the world (1890). Wouldn't mind one for bobbing around on actually ...

There is an old saying..'there is no smoke without fire'..Harley Davidson has factories in India and China which make various models..now I am not going to argue what you have to do to stick made in the USA on something but back in the day a well known brand imported a lot of electronic goods from overseas which were then assembled in the UK..the assembly in some cases consisted of opening the box and sticking the labels on that said the brand name and made in Britain.

Some say that the Harley's made in the Asian countries are made for the Asian market, but some spare parts definitely find their way across the pond..It is a well known fact that you can make or assemble something from spare parts..so maybe none of us can be sure that we are not riding a rice burner, and those of us who also ride Japanese bikes can not even be sure that part or all of our bikes were not patched together from Chinese parts.

As long as the welds hold together and we enjoy riding our bikes, even if they weren't really made where we think they were should we really waste our time worrying about it..

Not so!.......my 4-speeder regularly hits 70 (well, the needle wavers between 50 & 90 so I split the difference!;))


Former importers Watsonian-Squire got them to reinstate the 'Royal' many years ago (a bit like General Monk in 1660!:))


...and not to veer too far off topic....

Continuous production - the factory in India started out as an assembly plant for Royal Enfield in the UK, assembling 350 Bullets because the Indian armed forces and police had ordered so many it made more sense to ship them over in bits and assemble (in the true sense!) over there. Then when they changed the frame design, the jigs for the old frame went out to be used at the Indian factory (which is why the Indian-built bikes have always had the old frame), and later still they expanded the plant further and sent out tooling for building engines etc. so that complete bikes could be made.

Later still, when the arse dropped out of the UK market, the factory in Reddich closed ... but the Madras factory just kept on going, and has never stopped since ...

So although the ownership has changed over the years (which is true of all the older motorcycle manufacturers), and they removed the word "Royal" from the name out of sensitivity for the Indian market, the company has never actually closed and production has never stopped.
