Hi I've I'm working on a bike that's been stood for about 2 or 3 years
There's some rust on the chrome in a few places is it possible to polish it off or is there a product that will help remove it????
I can't afford to take the bike to bits and have them re chromed at the moment
Thanks in advance

Hi Gobb

I asked a similar question regarding aluminium casing on a bike i got which was in storage so there are a few replies there if you have a look

i used fine wire wool and then autosoll on the chrome and brillow pads on the alloy, worked well for now until i get the stuff together and try Tucks suggestion

hope this helps and good luck with the bike, what is it by the way

Autosol is basically a fine grinding paste so I only use it on chrome that's already in a bit of a bad way as it does remove the top surface. My personal choice is to use the Meguiars polish which I think is called NTX-it's too dark in my shed to see at the mo or I could tell you for sure! It does polish out surface rust and also leaves a protective covering on the chrome.
I will warn you though that Mequiars stuff is not the cheapest ;)

As far as I understand it, chrome does not rust, it is a protective coating over iron or steel, so any rust must come from minute cracks in the chrome coating, rechroming is the only real answer but you can clean the surface rust off with either a polishing compound or gently, with wire wool, then seal the surface with Rustins fast drying clear metal lacquer as a cheap tempory fix.
