My theory is everyone hates their job, I certainly hate my part time job! But then I detest all nursing and have developed a phobia of sick people and hospitals which isn't great if you're a nurse :D
What is it you like or hate about your job abd are you prepared to do anything about it i.e move to Swaziland and live off dhurka dhurka beetles and grubs!

Been in automotive engineering most of my life, its changed so much over the years with the decline of manufacturing you are now expected to be more flexible, read de-skilling, I hate it. Which is why I'm back studying with the OU, trouble is its going to take fecking forever. Tempted to go back full-time but at my age I just don't know, just don't feel like I got the right.

Being a student's ok, but anyone that tells you that it's all one big piss up either does fashion/psychology/media studies and/or has mummy and daddy pay for everything. My job is ****. I work as a silver service waiter at an agency, they ship me all over for not too much wedge (£4.85 an hour) not including travel time, which can be up to an hour. If I go really far (like birmingham-via sheffield) I get £6 for the time I'm actually there usually 11 hours which aint so bad, but from getting up to travelling there and coming back and moving between jobs coming home and getting back to bed, it works out at about £66-72 for a 23 hour day. (up at 5 meet in Leeds at 630 loads o travelling about, then back to bed at 4.) So no, my job is ****. And I dont get tips because we're only shipped in to serve then we get shipped out as soon as the coffee's poured, so the cleaners at the end get them.

Don't hate my job.
Okay - it takes me away from the boys (sons 10 months and 4½ years) and my toys (a number of bikes on the road and in the workshop) - but the people I work with and the work (a bit stressy at times) are okay.

The only reason why I'm at uni doing podiatry is because I will then be able to afford to work 3-4 days a week when I've qualified and spend the rest of my week doing the things I want to :D The only drawback is being skint for 3 years but it'll be worth it and I'll never have to do any nursing again ever.
Will also then be able to work from home and not have to suffer being an employee.
About half my course consists of mature people who are totally burnt out and re-training so they can have a better life. How long is your OU course then Gollum?

Of course you have the right - there are too many feckers takin these opportunities that don't really want them or deserve them. Your decision to get on and do it because you really want to, earns you the right to do it and to succeed!
I 'ran away' from home and school before I was fifteen and never thought I'd achieve anything...went to college (aged 38) to get some GCSEs and it snowballed from there...ended up a teacher (fcuk! Can u believe that!)
My old ma will be laughing and turning in her grave! lol School beetle spent more time at our house than he did at his - poor fecker! Used to come in and make himself a cup of tea and a sandwich BEFORE he gave me a bollocking! LOL

I am lucky, I love my job -
I am actually a qualified electronic engineer and worked for years in the industry. I never enjoyed it though, but it paid the bills....It is soul destroying slogging away and hating the job but having to carry on because you cannot afford to do anything else. I was a single parent then and had to put up with it. At least I earned really good wages and could afford to live well.Dreaded getting up in the morning though and hated everything about it.
I now just work in an office, have been here just over a year. I am on my own most of the time so I get to choose my own workload. I answer the phone and deal with technical queries and generally keep things going. Only work 9-5 Monday to Friday, all weekends and bank holidays off + 4 weeks annual holiday. Bliss....no overtime, no mobile calls. Just leave and go home and switch off.
My boss (and his wife - she works here part time) are BRILLIANT. They treat me really well and make the atmosphere here really good. It is the best place I have ever worked and I have been working for the last 35 years....They make it a pleasure to be here. I even get to have Fridays off to go to rallys...I am allowed to bring the dog into work if I want to as well. I plan to be here for as long as I can.

main jobs ok, but looking for something more interesting for Part time ( rally party money fund)
so sadly i suppose yes i like the jobs
mindyou wanna become suddenly rich and learn the rock n roll lifestyle of journalism
I gave up my job as a Bank Manager because after 10 years, the work bored me. I took a £12,000 per year pay decrease - Gave up a Big non-contributory Pension - Company Car was handed back - Massive discounts on company shares - Generous Clothing Allowances - Very Prestigous Office - 37 hours per week - Free healthcare for my family
I now work 60 hours (if I'm lucky) as a manager of an engineering company, it's filthy with no prospects, no pensions, no healthcare, no car, total mayhem, everyone's had enough of it all, including the boss who gets nose bleeds from all the stress.......
I do however have a part time gardening job - which really is the dog's dinner!

I used to be a caretaker working for the local council housing dept, where you were just the poor bastard who cleaned up the piss and vomit in the lifts of the tower blocks and most of the tennants blamed you for it anyway. start at 8 am tea at 10 lunch at 12 stuck as a slave to the clock....
Now I'm just a househusband mid week (to let Mrs BH work) and taxi driver at weekends.....Never the same job twice, One min im going into town, next job its out of town....never knowing where i'm going next (no boredom) ....my own boss..(abselute heaven) start when I want...Finish when I want...

i used to be in catering, Buffets and organised meals etc... and was my own boss, the money was good when it was there (summer, xmas) but i was always skint when it wern't...so i became a bus driver,....steady job, sh1te pay, Sh1te hours, sh1te Job....
driving a bus was fun, if it wasn't for the people getting on/off it would be a cracking job.
now i feel any job that has to deal with the 'general public' is god awful (when i couldnt drive a bus no-longer the company tried to get rid of me, but i took em to court under the DDA and won, they give me an office based job which i loved as it was deffo my cup of tea, except for the bit where we had to deal with the public...
put me off dealing with the general public it has..

or the worse of the lot. the ones that bring me something to make or weld, because they cannot do it. and question you as to weather you are doing it correctly :D

Do I hate my job? No, the jobs ok, a bit boring sometimes - but I do hate the bosses who don't give us enough staff to do the job as well as we used to do it, and then decide to employ new people who don't know anything about the job to give most of our work to, so that it'll be done better!
And can't make up their minds for years whether our office will stay open or close down - so we've all spent the last 3 years not knowing how long we'll have a job......
Last year when I was off I was pleased to get back to work after 4 and a half months - this time it's 5 months already and I'm not missing it!

Same here, don't hate the job (however boring it gets, I like boring) it's the wankers that are in control or arsehole creeping too them. Did and failed an appreticeship with the gasboard 'cos I was too busy drinking, riding me bike and chasing girls.
Worked for the post office, Timken bearings, and a Polystyrene Moulding company.
From there I went contract enginneering working anything up to 110 hours a week. Some jobs were 14 hours a day, 7 days a week. me and my mate used to do a 16 hour shift Thursday so we could get home Friday with the wages cheque. 2 hours drive each way and about 6 hours at home. Does wonders for your marriage. Started my own firm and bought a house after doing a six month contract in Nigeria (for coco-cola). Was paying £360 a month mortgage in 1980 and pulling around £900 a week (had 3-4 guys working for me) got well and truely f*cked in 1985 after building (did it myself) a £5,000 kitchen and getting asked for a divorce five weeks later. Went into silver recovery from film and ran that for about five years and then ended up working for Cosworths (road engines) for 3 and a half years. Did some temping including a dustman on wheelybin round and now work for Kab Seating in Northampton as a welder. There are two good things about the job, I don't have to work Fridays unless I want to do 4 hours overtime and I qualified as a welder (NVQ 1) and had the opportunity to go on to do the D32/33 weld assessor and C25 trainer (also became one of a team of three who test all company welders and train all new welders).
That's it so far, can't talk about my part time job as a film viewer, but I am watching 'Anal Angels' at the moment. It's a dirty job, but somebody has to do it......

True,true.
I manage a lighting showroom at an old train station in rural suffolk. Its in the middle of the countryside (just off the A14) and its great. The owner pays me a reasonable salary (won't ever be rich but I won't starve). I get to run it pretty much as I like, do the display work myself, deal with stock, new customers every day.
Only downside is that I work most Saturdays.
For eight years prior to this I was the production supervisor for Durex in Cambridge. I could definately write a book about that !
I have had plenty of jobs I hated but did them to keep food on the table and my bike on the road.
I really enjoyed my last job, Saw Operator/Labourer in a small engineering firm. It was a great place to work as the boss was a complete nutter and everyone got on really well. I had to leave cos of my back injuries and was hoping one day to be able to return, but my latest medical report has put the kybosh on that. :(

I've enjoyed being self employed for the last 18 years the first 15 as a boat repair and maintenance man and now as a painter and decorator but I've never made any money at it no matter how hard I work or how long I work so I have now just had an interveiw for a job back with the military (civilian side) which I have been offered subject to background checks etc., at least I will have a steady income, not much, but probably more than I have ever earned in self employment.
I got pissed of working for a guy who just ripped off disabled folk.
So the beginning of this year i started my own business servicing electric wheelchairs and scooters(most mobility shops get salesmen to do it ,so you can see what a good job they would do)And custom wheelchair mods if folk ask.
I try and give good old fashion customer service, the money is crap. But i get to work the hours i want.
Got a little factory unit with a lathe/miller and saw and a TIG welder so i can make anything i want,so thats fun.
So just struggling on.

i just wish the company i work for would catch up. dont get me wrong, i'm not out there looking for a nother job and dont think i'd take another one if it was offered to me, but we all have our own little niggles. the only real way i can see my leaving this job is when i move back to oz and even then i'd probley just transfer to the oz branch. :D
body piercer, and run our 'gift' shop................. :D
No boss, (except the ol' man, but I can handle him!!), no early mornings.. :D
No regular pay day but would rather still work for meself......... :)
Yes.....I love my job............ :D
Work in the office of a courier company, and I really hate it!!!
If I didnt need the money or could pick up another job I would have gone long ago.....
Nobody wants you when you're down and out...... or over 50.... or had a break of 18 months in the IT world.... or if you ride a bike in all weathers.... or (shut up Pyro you whinger..)
i was a driver for a major courier company (City Link) for 7 years, and bloody hated it too, so I know how you feel Pyro.......... :(

Student. Third year plumbing. Do odds and sods to fill in between attendance.
Plumbing work, used to run a certain band around the country, organise stage, bands and transport for various people/clubs/companies and I while away my free time in the pub or Jukes shop drinking coffee,
And I still manage to get good exam results....

I've had an about face since I started this thread, I actually like my job now - just took a long time to settle in :) They heaped a lot of responsibility on me right from the beginning which I wasn't used to so it was a bit of a baptism of fire, and definitely out of my "comfort zone". But now I've got used to it and it's ok.
I hated my job so much that I told them to stuff it last week!

Love what I do (sound engineer/stage technician)! Hate where I do it! Council run venue, beaurocracy is mind staggeringly stupid, management can't organise a fuck in a brothel and won't listen to the people at the sharp end who know, and best not mention political correctness! The vast majority of the turns I meet are really pleasant and I have many good friends among the touring freelance technicians that it's always pleasant to catch up with whenever they come through.Have to work weekends because that's when Joe Public most want to be entertained, so have to use annual leave EVERY time I want to go to a rally, which means I can't get to as many as I'd like, and can't just be spontaneous and go on a whim, have to plan well in advance. Could try changing venues, but that means moving somewhere else (and I enjoy living where I do), and , frankly, at 54 it's not easy to get another job, so I guess i'll stick it out 'til retirement. There's many worse off then me! :D
