the letter says that from march 2004 they introduced a charge i thought that as its not a duplicate i wanted they would automatically have sent them out but no you want a v5c £19 thank you. *r*e

Sounds like someones discovered a new way to screw us!!
just had paperwork back for my new Nighthawk, but wasn't charged for that, was it just because you wanted a copy of the v5 or a new one as you are the new owner, if it's the 2nd, get hold of the dealer and get him to pay for it, he should have sent off the original anyway

Hmmm. I bought a bike with no V5. Applied to DVLA on a V62 and they told me the same story, £19 please.
However if you have the V5/2 (the little green slip) you should be able to tax the vehicle and the DVLA should send you the V5 back in your name. You have 2 months to do this, but after 1 month I'd be ringing them to find out why you haven't received it.
Looks like Gordon "pick pocket" Brown and his mates from the Treasury have had you over. If you've still got the V5/2 ring 'em up and tell 'em.

have just come of the phone to dvla apears they made a mistake £19 only applies for duplicate docs or if you havent sent new owners sup so i dont have to pay just have to wait for new papers again already taxed the bike using green bit but dvla never sent me new papers so when i applied using v62 they wanted £19.their mistake not mine so sod them

my understanding is that this is yet another way for them to try to ensure that the registered keeper details are kept up to date & v5's filled in correctly & sent off when vehicles change hands.
you're not gonna buy a bike with no v5 if it's gonna cost you £19 without seriously grilling the seller as to why he hasn't got one, are you?
